SAHS tankers defeat Bluffton (01/06/06)

BERNE — Haleigh Lehman won a pair of events for the second straight meet, and Jessica Sharp and Justin Klopp joined her as the South Adams swimmers defeated the Bluffton Tigers Thursday.

The Starfish girls team clobbered Bluffton 114-56 while the boys won a close battle by a 92-78 margin.

Lehman took care of the sprints for the South Adams girls, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 27.94 seconds and the 100 freestyle with a time of 1-minute, 0.65 seconds. Sharp controlled the distance races, with victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle in 2:13.52 and 5:57.31 respectively.

Klopp paced the boys team by matching Lehman’s effort. His win in the 50 freestyle came in a time of 23.73, and he took first in the 100 freestyle in 53.01.

Other victories came from Margaret Beymer, Jalisa Balsiger, Courtney Hewitt, Matt Kruse and Kyle Affolder.

High Roller girls win big

BLUFFTON — The Jay County High Rollers high school girls bowling team improved to 6-2 Thursday with a 17-3 destruction of Marion.

Jay County got off to a slow start, but still easily won the opening game 780-699 and took all but one point in the process. It stayed in control in the second game for an 830-797 win.

Autumn Shepherd posted the high series of 366 as she and Summer Roush each earned two points. Sarah Mescher rolled a 199 for the top game score.

Fort splits with ’Cats

FORT RECOVERY — Cody Fiely and the Fort Recovery eighth grade boys basketball team had just enough to hold off the Minster Wildcats Thursday, 36-33. The Tribe seventh graders suffered a 41-15 defeat.

Fiely scored 12 points for the Indians (4-2), who built a six-point lead in the first quarter but were in a battle all the way. Josh Wendel added eight points, and Greg Kahlig had six.

The Fort Recovery seventh graders had a three-point advantage after the first period, but got outscored 30-5 over the next two. Craig Fortkamp finished with six points, and Shane Brunswick had four.

East Jay tops Delta

MUNCIE — A big first quarter Thursday helped the East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team stay undefeated.

The Chiefs grabbed an 8-1 lead in the opening quarter on the way to a 34-27 victory over the Delta Eagles. East Jay’s seventh graders also topped Delta, 23-14.

Lindsey Wellman racked up 21 points for the eighth grade team (6-0), which was up by three at halftime and seven after three periods. Shelby Gierhart added seven points.

The seventh grade Chiefs (5-2) were also up by seven points after the first period as they improved to 5-2. Cara Garringer scored 13 points, and Erin Hunt finished with six.

Wellman had 14 points to lead Wednesday’s 35-23 win over Decatur St. Joe. Garringer, Laura Castillo, Erin Hunt and Brittany Manor each had six points as the seventh grade team topped previously unbeaten St. Joe 30-26.

XPLEX event set for TV

The United Rockcrawling & Off-road Challenge event held at Portland’s XPLEX Extreme Competition Park is scheduled to be televised this month. The competition will air on ESPN2 Sunday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
