SA's Meyer starts 2005 in style (01/15/05)
Collegiate check-up
Amy Meyer got off to a great start to 2005 with the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team.
The South Adams graduate opened 2005 by hitting five 3-pointers and scoring 17 points to lead the Lady Cougars to a 73-61 win over Indiana Tech Jan. 2. Four of her 3-point goals came in the first half.
She followed that effort with an even better one, scoring a career-high 24 points in a 92-52 throttling of Spalding University Jan. 4. She led NAIA 17th-ranked St. Francis (14-7) on a 22-2 run in the first half as it pulled away.
Meyer leads the Cougars and is second in the Mid-Central College Conference with a .470 3-point percentage. She has his 39 triples in 21 games this year.
Sara Heitkamp
The Capital University junior and her women’s basketball team didn’t wait long to bounce back from their first loss of the season, topping Heidelberg 58-48 Tuesday.
Heitkamp, a 2002 Fort Recovery graduate, paced the Crusaders with 15 points. She finished 4-of-4 from the foul line and added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Capital is now 11-1 overall, 5-1 in the OAC and ranked sixth in the nation by d3hoops.com.
Heitkamp was also the leading scorer for the Crusaders in their first loss, a 60-57 defeat at the hands of OAC rival John Carroll Jan. 5. She scored 21 points in the loss.
She also had seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The junior had eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 68-46 victory over Defiance Dec. 30.
Heitkamp leads Capital in scoring (16.6 points per game), assists (50) and steals (49). She is second on the team with 5.9 rebounds per contest.
She ranks second in the OAC in steals and third in scoring and assists.
Kyle Weaver
The 2003 Jay County graduate earned one individual win and added a relay victory as the Wabash College swim team finished its two-week training trip to Delray Beach, Fla. with a 69-39 win over Ohio Northern.
Weaver finishing first in the 50-yard butterfly, notching a time of 29.1 seconds. He also teamed with Anthony Caldwell, Colin Fahey and Michael Hewitt for first place in the 200-yard medley relay in 1-minute, 59.98 seconds.
The Little Giants, which also include former Jay County swimmers Andrew Wells and Caleb Dann, are ranked fifth in Division three by CollegeSwimming.com.
Kerri McClung
The Bowling Green senior opened the indoor track season by picking up one of the Falcons’ 10 victories as they competed at the Saginaw Valley Indoor Classic Dec. 10.
McClung, a Jay County graduate, finished first in the shot put. Her best throw was 48 feet, seven inches.
She also had a good showing in the weight throw as she placed seventh with a toss of 48 feet, two inches.
Tyler Niekamp
The Fort Recovery graduate got into the action in each of the last two victories for the Division II No. 7 Findlay University men’s basketball team.
Niekamp grabbed one rebound and had one assist in the Oilers’ 83-60 win over Northwood Saturday, Jan. 8. He saw four minutes of action as Findlay blasted Lake Superior State 85-68 Thursday.
He also had one point, one rebound and one steal in a 90-53 win over Wilberforce University Dec. 28.
Findlay is now 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Joanie Muhlenkamp
A 2002 graduate of Jay County, she scored six points as Taylor University - Fort Wayne topped Rochester College 65-61 Thursday.
Muhlenkamp added six points and two assists in the victory. She also had one steal and one block.
Mitch Waters
The Jay County graduate saw limited action several recent games for the Manchester College men’s basketball team.
Waters scored one point in a 78-56 win over Thomas More Dec. 29. He played, but did not score, in wins over Waynesburg and Defiance.
