SAHS football
Dustin Wanner got a lot of attention this season for leading the Starfire offense.
It was his work on defense that earned him a state award.
Wanner, a South Adams High School senior, was named Wednesday to the Class 1A All-State team at defensive back by the Associated Press. He also earned all-state honorable mention as a punter.
Marcus Rich (running back), Joel Schmidt (offensive line), Drew Taylor (offensive line), Sam Dellinger (defensive line), Cole Farlow (linebacker), Justin Wygant (safety) all earned honorable mention. Wanner, Farlow, Dellinger, Schmidt and Wygant were also voted to the All-Allen County Athletic Conference first team this week, with Rich, Taylor and Blake Fox earning second-team honors.
As one of the leaders of a defense that ranked fourth in Class 1A in scoring defense at 16.1 points per game, Wanner recorded 46 tackles this season. He also had a pair of interceptions, tied for the team lead.
Wanner averaged 39 yards per punt with a long of 57 yards to earn all-state honorable mention at that position.
His ACAC award came for his efforts at quarterback as he ran for 1,244 yards and 19 touchdowns and passed for 799 yards and eight TDs.
The senior’s all-around efforts helped lead the Starfires to an 8-1 regular-season record. The Starfires defeated Monroe Central and Union City in the tournament before falling to Sheridan 41-40 in overtime in the sectional championship game.
Farlow, Dellinger and Wygant were the three Starfires to finish with more tackles than Wanner, with Farlow leading the way with 69. Dellinger added 67 tackles, and Wygant finished with 55.
Dellinger recorded a team-high nine sacks to go along with 12 tackles for a loss. Wygant had one interception, and Farlow notched a blocked field goal.
Taylor, Schmidt and Fox anchored an offensive line that led a dominant ground game. The Starfires averaged more than 300 yards rushing per game, finishing with 3,603 for the season an average of 6.9 yards per attempt and 47 touchdowns.
Rich helped pad that rushing average, picking up 12.8 yards per carry. He finished with 513 yards and eight touchdowns on just 40 attempts.[[In-content Ad]]
