Collegiate Check-up
Sarah Schmitz and the University of St. Francis softball team didn't just take a leisurely spring break trip. The Cougars were a busy group.
St. Francis played 10 games March 10 through 14 during its trip to the Smash Hit Tournament hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Schmitz, a 2003 Fort Recovery graduate, keyed two of the Cougar wins in the tournament and finished the five-day span as one of the team's top hitters.
She went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI in an 11-9 victory over Illinois-Springfield on the final day of the tournament. On the opening day she finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in a 7-5 win over Union (Ky.).
Schmitz started all 10 games and posted the fourth-highest batting average on the team at .345. She had 10 hits, five runs, four walks, three RBIs, two doubles and a stolen base for St. Francis (3-7).
Tyler Niekamp
Fort Recovery - 2003
Grabbed three rebounds in his third-ranked Findlay University's first NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament game, but was blanked as the Oilers suffered a 60-56 upset to Northern Kentucky in the second round.
Niekamp grabbed his three boards in nine minutes of action in the 74-60 victory March 10 over Wisconsin-Parkside, the team's 28th straight victory. But the top-seeded Oilers, who finished 29-2, lost 60-56 Sunday to NKU.
Findlay led by three at the half in its second round game, and was up 56-52 with just 2:48 to play. But Steven Wright hit a 3-pointer and proceeded to score seven straight points as the Oilers were outscored 8-0 to close the game.
Niekamp played in all 31 games for Findlay this season, averaging 3.6 points in 13.5 minutes. He shot 51 percent from the field and 38-of-83 (46 percent) from 3-point range, and totaled 63 rebounds, 16 steals and 14 assists.
Heath Williams
Jay County - 2004
Sparked the Manchester College baseball team Tuesday as it clobbered Grace College 22-3.
Williams kicked off the bottom of the first inning with a single followed by a steal of second base to launch a five-run frame. He added three walks, three runs, an RBI and a stolen base as the Spartans ran out to an 18-0 lead.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
Improved on her finish from a year ago at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships March 8-10 with a 10th-place finish for the Huntington University women's track team.
Roughia finished the first heat of the 1,000-meter run in 3-minutes, 7.92 seconds. She was five seconds short of the top eight, which would have qualified her for the championship race.
She was named Huntington North's Athlete of the Week for her effort, marking the second time this season she has earned the honor.
Alyssa Johnson
Jay County - 2006
Also competed in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships as part of a relay team for Taylor University.
Johnson joined Vanessa Fereshetian, Lolly York and Winchester graduate Tabitha Bogue in the distance medley. They finished with a time of 13-minute, 2.72 seconds for 17th place.[[In-content Ad]]
