Scots score two shutouts over Patriots (05/09/05)

PORTLAND — Jay County’s baseball team got a couple of solid outings from junior pitchers Saturday, but managed just three hits in losing 4-0 and 1-0 to the Anderson Highland Scots.

Josh Shatto had a great effort wasted in game two as he allowed just one run on three hits. The lone Highland run came in the first inning, and John Retter had the only hit of the game for the Patriots (5-11, 1-5 Olympic Athletic Conference).

Josh Atkinson gave up just four runs while striking out eight batters in the first game. But, Rhett Retter and Eric Somers had the only hits to back him up.

Jay golfers fourth

MUNCIE — Alex Hunt was among the top scorers in the tournament Saturday as the Jay County boys golf team took fourth at the Delaware Invitational.

The Patriots scored a 336, six strokes back of Muncie Central. No. 3 Yorktown won at Delaware Country Club with a 316, and Delta was second at 325.

Hunt was consistently good for Jay County. He opened with a 40 on the front nine, and had the best score on the team on the back by three strokes to finish with a sixth-place 78.

Tyler Johnston followed Hunt with an 84. Adam Foster was next with an 86, Ben Freeman shot 88 and Nathan McClung finished with a 90.

FR JV dominates

LIMA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team finished off both of its games in five innings Saturday, topping the Lima Senior Spartans 11-0 and 14-4.

Lauren Wenning powered the Tribe in game one as it scored nine first-inning runs.

She went 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs.

Jodi Tobe also scored a pair of runs, and Heather Schmackers and Sam Staugler each had two hits.

The offensive leader in game two was Kyla Metzger, who finished 3-for-3 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI. Kris Willmann had three hits and two runs, and Leanne Tobin finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Beth May struck out six in the game-one victory, and Kim Willmann earned the win in game two.

Jay JV cruises

UNION CITY — Travis Towell’s home run highlighted a brilliant offensive day for the Jay County junior varsity baseball team as it hammered the Union City Indians 16-4 in six innings Saturday.

Towell finished 3-for-4 as the Patriots (9-5) scored in five of the six innings, including six runs in the sixth. He had two doubles to go along with his home run.

Justin Mann and Tom McCowan were also each 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Tony McCowan went 3-for-4 as well. Bryce DeBoy was 2-for-3 with a double, and Luke Goetz added two hits.

R.J. Fuller earned the win as he struck out 11 batters.[[In-content Ad]]
