Season ends for High Rollers (02/13/06)

Local roundup

NEW CASTLE — One pin individually, 12 as a team.

Those were the margins which end the season for the Jay County High Rollers high school bowlers Saturday.

Thomas McCowan rolled a 621 series in regional action at New Castle, leaving him a pin short of a top-15 finish which would have earned a semi-state berth. And the girls team fell 12 pins short of the fifth and final qualifying spot for the semi-state tournament.

The High Roller boys team never got on track, finishing 10th in the 11-team field. Winchester won the boys title, Alexandria took home the girls championship and Adam Bischoff of Huntington North won the individual boys title.

The girls team opened with an 884 to be in second place, but slipped to sixth heading in Baker play. It pulled to within two pins of fifth place with one game to go, but could not complete the comeback.

The boys team rolled games of 896 and 890, nearly 100 pins below its season average, and had five-game Baker total of 842.

Stars 2nd, EJ fourth

South Adams’ wrestling team took second place at the East Jay Invitational Saturday, scoring 246.5 points. East Jay was fourth with 184 while Yorktown (317) finished first and Winchester Driver (233) was third.

The Starfires walked away with four titles, including two pins in championship matches.

Stuart Poulson (110) finished T.J. Gibson of Yorktown in 1-minute, 20 seconds, and John Striker (115) pinned Muncie Wilson’s Zach Douthitt in 1:58. Gabe Sprunger (80) won his final match by a 16-0 technical fall, and Josh Ehr (95) picked up a 4-2 victory.

Losing championship matches to finish as runners-up were Braden Baer (105) and Jimmy West (225).

Zach Somers (90) and Scott Houston (135) were the only East Jay wrestlers to make the finals at the six-team event, each finishing in second place with 2-1 records. Nick Stephen (145) went 2-1 on the day to finish third.[[In-content Ad]]
