Seventh-ranked Delta tops Patriots in finale (05/17/05)

MUNCIE — The Patriots couldn’t have faced much better competition with the tournament on the way.
Jay County’s girls tennis team dropped its final match of the regular season Monday by a 5-0 score to the seventh-ranked Delta Eagles. The sectional draw was also held Monday, and the Patriots will open tournament play Thursday against Blackford at Marion at 4:30 p.m.
It was tough for Jay County to even get on the board against the Eagles as it won only six games total.
Three of those came from No. 2 singles player Erin St. Myers, who fell 6-2, 6-1 to Kristin McKinney. She had won 11 of her previous 12 matches, and is now 11-3 at No. 2 singles this season.
Freshman Tiffani Bickel put together a solid effort as she made her varsity debut at No. 3 singles. She dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to junior Carly Humphrey.
At No. 2 doubles Stephanie Homan and Carissa Wilkins lost 6-1, 6-0 to Kristin Wright and Lindsey Loffer.
The other two matches were shutouts, with Whitney Schemenaur losing 6-0, 6-0 to Hayley Hall and the team of Jenae Horn and Brianne Morrical dropping 6-0, 6-0 to Katie Bryan and Kristin Crider.
The Patriots will be favored in their opening tournament match, having beaten Blackford 3-2 in the season opener.
The winner of the Jay County/Blackford match will head to Friday’s semifinals against Mississinewa at Matter Park in Marion at 4:30 p.m. The other semifinal match, between Madison-Grant and the host Giants, will be at Marion High School
The championship match will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at MHS.
The Patriots have been to four straight titles matches, but only took the title in 2001. Marion has won three consecutive sectional titles and 12 of the last 13.
Jay County’s junior varsity team lost to Delta Monday by a 5-0 score, also managing to win just six games as a team. Katey Kohler won half of those at No. 3 singles in an 8-3 loss to Hannah Whiteman.
In other singles matches Angie Stults lost to Elaine Shafer 8-1, and Megan Adams fell to Melanie Rapp 8-0. In doubles action Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle dropped by an 8-1 score to Brittany Tegle and Kyle Zeyen, and Cindy Muhlenkamp and Betsy Knittle lost to Bre Smith and Katie Alexander by the same tally.[[In-content Ad]]
