Several Patriots earn 4A honors (12/02/05)

Four Jay County athletes were among those honored as The Associated Press All-State football teams were announced Thursday.

Seniors Justin Gilbert, Bill Spahr and Joseph Vormohr and junior Corey Comer were each earned honorable mention in Class 4A.

Gilbert ran for more than 1,400 yards this season, including a single-game school record of 308. Vormohr was a member of the offensive line which paved the way for Gilbert and fellow 1,000-yard rusher Steven Castillo.

Comer, a tight end, was the top receiver for the Patriots (7-4) this year, and Spahr earned the award for his work at defensive end.

Vormohr will also be honored by the Indianapolis Colts as an Indiana High School Football Academic All-Star. He and the other 23 honorees from the state will be recognized before the Colts’ Dec. 18 game against the San Diego Chargers.

Six pins power SA

GARRETT — The South Adams wrestling team nearly doubled the Allen County Athletic Conference rival Garrett Railroaders Thursday night, scoring six pins for a 48-26 victory.

The Starfires (5-0) got off to a good start, getting a forfeit win by Mark Farris (103) followed by Josh Mann (112) pinning Tim Johnson in just 52 seconds. They were victorious in each of the first six weight classes, building a 30-0 lead before Garrett got on the board.

Other pins came from Dustin Ehr (145) in 2-minutes, 51 seconds, Jim Marbach (130) in 3:03, Spencer Haworth (125) in 5:42, Josh Kimberlin (215) in 5:45 and Adam Hirschy (160) in overtime. Also winning matches were Colt Gentis (119) and Christian Baer (135).

Chief cagers split

East Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team eked out a 37-35 victory over Muncie Northside Thursday to improve to 2-0. The seventh grade Chiefs fell to 1-1 with a 40-30 loss.

Brad Horn and Eric Homan powered the attack for the eighth graders, finishing with 13 and 12 points respectively. Jacob Chenoweth and Ben Vance each scored four points.

Aaron Emerick scored 12 points for the seventh grade squad. Garrett Krieg had six points, and Joe Wallischeck scored four.[[In-content Ad]]
