Shatto Ks 20 in 1st victory (04/28/04)

Jay County Roundup

When Josh Shatto decided to get his first win he didn’t hold anything back.

In just his third varsity start, the Jay County sophomore struck out an unofficial school record 20 batters in a 7-0 victory over the Union City Indians Tuesday.

Shatto struck out each of the first 11 batters he faced. He did not allow a hit until the seventh inning, and walked just one hitter in the contest.

Lea Selvey, coach of the Patriots, said he has not had a player strike out 20 batters in a game since he took over the program in 1989. He said there were no records for single-game strikeouts prior to that time.

The effort dropped Shatto’s season ERA from 7.80 before the game to 4.87 after. He has struck out 37 batters in just 182/3 innings of work this season for an average of 1.98 per inning.

Josh Jellison, Jay County’s ace last year, struck out 90 batters in 812/3 innings for an average of 1.10 per inning.

The Patriots’ first three hitters — Heath Williams, Trent Bailey and Chad Keen — supported Shatto with two hits apiece as the team improved to 4-6 on the year.

Williams finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two runs and three stolen bases, and Keen went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs. Bailey was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two stolen bases.

Jay County will travel to South Adams to take on the Starfires today at 4:30 p.m.
