Shawver leads Patriots to 11th victory (05/26/04)

Jay County Roundup

The Patriots are seeking an undefeated season. And senior Jesse Shawver seems determined to lead them to it.

Shawver paced the Jay County golf team for the second straight meet with a 38 as it defeated the Randolph Southern Rebels 161-187 Tuesday on the Pony 9 at Winchester Golf Club.

The victory improved the Patriots to 11-0 in dual meets this year with just three left to play.

Shawver, who shot a 34 last week against Muncie Burris, was 2-over-par through the first two holes Tuesday. But, he quickly pulled even again with birdies on the on the 298-yard, par-4 third hole and the 520-yard, par-5 fourth.

He bogied No. 5 and 6, but then finished with three consecutive pars for his 2-over round.

Jay County No. 1 player Tyler Johnston was not far behind the team’s lone senior, as he also scored a pair of birdies and three pars on the way to a 39. He matched Shawver’s birdie on the fourth hole, and finished his round with a birdie on the 320-yard, par-4 ninth.

Alex Hunt finished with five pars on the way to a 40, and Adam Foster had four pars to finish with a 43. Nathan McClung finished with a 44 as all the Patriot players finished ahead of Randolph Southern’s top pair.

Wes Frame and Travis Ogden each shot 45 for the Rebels.

Jay County will visit Union City Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Ben Freeman and Josh Thornburg each shot 41 to lead the Patriot JV team to a 170-233 victory over Randolph Southern. Gray Suman had a 43, Adam Arnold shot a 45 and James Brosher finished with a 47.

Sours, St. Myers advance

At mid-season the Jay County tennis team’s No. 1 doubles pair of Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers guaranteed they would be playing at Peru. The duo made good on that promise with a perfect effort at the Marion team sectional last weekend, and are now making their first appearance to the doubles sectional well worth the trip.

Sours and St. Myers teamed for a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jena Schrader and Amanda Smith of Maconaquah in semifinal action at Peru Tuesday. The juniors will play seniors Sarah Conwell and Katie Hungate of Northwestern for the Peru doubles sectional title at 5 p.m.

Conwell and Hungate reached the finals with at 7-5, 6-4 win over Madison-Grant juniors Shea Smock and Michaela Conner Tuesday.

Jay streak ends

The Jay County baseball team’s seven-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday with a 6-0 loss to the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.

The Patriots (17-9) managed just two hits against Bryan Dodd — one each by Heath Williams and Trent Bailey. Bailey also had a stolen base.

Josh Shatto took the loss, allowing six runs — three earned — in five innings. He gave up just three hits, but also walked six batters while striking out five.

Jay County, which hand not lost since May 15 against Fort Recovery, will play its final regular-season game against Bellmont at home Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
