CONVERSE — Katie Simmons led the Jay County High School girls cross country team to a runner-up finish Tuesday at the Oak Hill Invitational. Eastbrook won the eight-team event with 36 points, and the Patriots were three points behind in second.
In the boys competition, JCHS was seventh out of nine teams with 174 points.
Katie Simmons was the individual runner-up, turning in a time of 20 minutes, 22 seconds to trail only Sophie Seward (19:47) of Eastbrook. Eme Miller followed in fourth place for the Patriots in 20:59.
Abigail Johnson was eighth in 21:46 ahead of Liz Lennartz (12th – 22:23) and Kaitlin Hemmelgarn (16th – 23:01).
Dylan Cope turned in an 11th-place finishing in 18:19 for the boys, who finished tied with Peru but lost the tiebreaker because they do not have a sixth runner. Stephen Scott was 19th in 18:56 followed by Chaz Carroll (55th – 20:55), Jacob Nichols (76th – 21:59) and Wiley Young (85th – 23:53).

Girls golfers split
MUNCIE — The Patriots finished with a 221 Tuesday at Muncie Elks Golf Club to finish ahead of Wes-Del (244) but behind No. 9 Yorktown (153).
Alysia Fennig paced Jay County with a 54, which including a par on the par-5 eighth hole and a bogey on the par-3 ninth. Brittany Stevens had three pars in her round of 55.
Kennedy Windlan and Morgan Clark of Yorktown shared medalist honors at 36, and Alivia Yeakle led Wes-Del with a 48.
Whitney Gray birdied the eighth hole for the Patriots and Katlin Petro had a par on the par-3 second hole as they both finished at 57. Maddison Baughn shot 62, and Cortney Myers finished with a 68.

NC tops girls soccer
NEW CASTLE — Jay County’s girls soccer team couldn’t come up with its third straight win as it fell 5-0 Tuesday to the New Castle Trojans.
New Castle broke a scoreless tie with 17:45 left in the first half and added two more goals in a span of just over eight minutes. The home team scored two more goals in the second half for the final margin.
Mollie May finished with four saves for the Patriots (4-3), who had won back-to-back games over Huntington North and Norwell, and Brooke Reynard added three. Maddie Bailey took the lone JCHS shot on goal.
Jay County dropped the junior varsity game 4-0.

Jay gridders win

The Jay County junior varsity and freshman football teams combined to hand the Muncie Southside B Team a 42-8 loss Tuesday.
The JV offensive line of Collin Saxman, Brandon Donothan, Chase Smith, Brayden Dues, Spencer Patterson and Radney Pearson paved the way for three rushing touchdowns — one from Chase Louck and two by Zach Metcalf. Louck also scored on a 70-yard kickoff return.
Kaleb Toland had an 8-yard rushing TD for the freshman squad, which also got sacks from Logan Antrim and Hunter Prescott.

Chief spikers win
East Jay Middle School’s volleyball teams won their season openers Tuesday over Blackford, the eighth graders by a 25-12, 25-15 score and the seventh grade squad by a 25-9, 25-18 final.
Ava Kunkler had six points and five kills to lead the eighth grade Chiefs. Mallory Marshall and Cheyenne Loy each had six points and four aces, and Hannah Lykins put up five assists.
Gracie Runkle racked up 15 aces for the seventh graders. Megan Smith scored three points.

Newsome leads WJ
MUNCIE — Phillip Newsome reached the end zone twice Tuesday to lead the West Jay Middle School eighth grade football team to a 24-6 win over Muncie Wilson. The seventh grade game ended in an 8-8 tie.
Newsome scored on a 95-yard run and 80-yard kickoff return. He also tossed a 50-yard TD pass to Aaron Neal, and totaled eight tackles and a fumble recovery for the eighth grade Eagles (1-1).
Jacob Geesaman ran 11 times for 113 yards, including a 4-yard TD run, for the seventh graders (0-1-1). Logan Bantz had seven tackles.

EJMS defeats Wilson
East Jay Middle School’s cross country teams rolled to victories Tuesday over visiting Muncie Wilson, which did not field a complete team in any of the three races.
Emi Minnich led the Chief girls, who swept the top five, with a time of 13 minutes, 40 seconds. Following her were Megan Wellman (13:46), Ericka Kunkler (14:25), Sophie Bader (14:52) and Kelly Fortkamp (14:53).
The eighth grade boys also swept the top five with Michael Denney winning in 14:34. Logan Hicks was next in 14:46 ahead of Matthew Cox (14:58), Dustin Bricker (14:59) and Sok Vormohr (15:05). Mark Hein won the seventh grade boys race in 14:15 in front of Tim Hein (second - 14:30), Trevor Moeller (third – 14:42), Kaiman Sanders (fifth – 15:24) and Jason Minnich (sixth – 15:26).[[In-content Ad]]
