Local roundup

MUNCIE - Kyle Simmons should be a big fan of the Olympic Athletic Conference.

Simmons ran his OAC record to 4-0, winning all three matches as the Jay County boys tennis team finished second with a 2-1 record at the conference tournament Saturday. The Patriots defeated Connersville 4-1 and host Muncie Southside 5-0, and lost to Anderson Highland for the second time this year by a 4-1 score.

Jay County took the opener against Connersville thanks to three wins in the super tiebreaker format. Josh Ludy at No. 1 singles, Simmons at No. 3 singles and Mark Alberson and Adam Horn at No. 2 doubles all won in the extra session, and No. 2 doubles player Phil Powell scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Simmons won another super tiebreaker to pick up the Patriots' only victory over Highland.

The five wins over Southside all came in straight sets, with Jay County giving up three games or fewer in each. Ludy, Powell and Alberson/Horn all went 2-1, and Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby finished 1-2 at No. 1 singles.
