BERNE — The Starfires got on track in their first conference game.
South Adams High School’s girls soccer team rallied on its home field Thursday from a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat the Allen County Athletic Conference rival Garrett Railroaders by a 4-2 score.
After Michaela Rupp tied the game on an assist from Jessie Beavers, freshman Alaina Johnston put the Starfires (1-4, 1-0 ACAC) in the lead. Her score came on an assist from Rachel Simon, a junior, as the duo connected three times in the game.
Simon gave SAHS an insurance goal for the 4-2 final margin and also scored the team’s opening goal in the first half, both on assists from Johnston.
Brianna Nevil shut out the Railroaders in the second half and finished the game with five saves.

Bulldogs beat netters
NEW HAVEN — South Adams’ boys tennis team suffered its second loss in as many days Thursday, falling 3-2 to the New Haven Bulldogs.
The match came down to a tight battle at No. 1 doubles, with tiebreakers as the deciding factor. Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz of the Starfires came away on the short end of a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3) loss to Reeves Shumaker and Scotty Ferguson.
Scott Hoeppner defeated Tyler Purvis 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for SAHS, which had opened with three straight wins before falling Wednesday to Norwell.
J.D. Tarr and Jonathan Steffen picked up the other SAHS win at No. 2 doubles by a 6-2, 6-3 score over Zach Fritcha and Braedon Holle.

In singles action, Mark Muselman lost 6-1, 6-2 to Drew Save at No. 2 and Brayden Myers fell 6-2, 6-3 to Chase Ramaly at No. 3.

No. 1 Squaws top spikers
DECATUR — The Class 3A No. 1 Bellmont Squaws overpowered the South Adams volleyball team 25-8, 25-14, 25-5 Thursday.
Cady Farlow totaled seven digs, five kills and one ace for the Starfires in the defeat. Chelsea Bollenbacher had three blocks, two kills and two aces.
South Adams dropped the junior varsity and freshman matches 25-11, 25-11 and 25-14, 25-10 respectively.

Boys soccer loses
FORT WAYNE — The Starfires weren’t able to slow down the Fort Wayne North Side Redskins Thursday in a 9-1 defeat.
South Adams trailed 4-0 before getting on the board late in the first half on a goal by Japanese foreign exchange student Hirotaka Asoako. The Redskins, who got three first-half goals from Henry Escobar, added five more scores in the second half for the final margin.
L.J. Moser was bombarded with 32 shots on goal, finishing the game with 23 saves.[[In-content Ad]]
