Simon's scores power South Adams

WOODBURN — Rachel Simon got the Starfires on the board and then helped out her teammates.
Simon’s goal and two assists powered the South Adams High School girls soccer team to a 4-0 victory Saturday over the host Woodlan Warriors.
The Starfires (6-8) got the opening goal of the game in the first half when Simon scored off of an assist from Sharon Balsiger. Simon, who racked up a team-best seven shots on goal, returned the favor to Balsiger on a second-half goal, and she also assisted on a score by Michaela Rupp.
Samantha Sprunger (five shots on goal) added a goal for South Adams on an assist from Rupp.
Alaina Johnston finished with nine saves in the shutout.

Muselman leads
FORT WAYNE — The South Adams girls cross country team placed fourth with 127 points in Saturday’s Class A race at the New Haven Invitational at IPFW. They were one point behind third-place Northwestern while Southern Wells won with 78.
The boys team competed in the Class 3A event, placing 16th out of 22 teams with 404 points. Carroll was first with 38.
Kristen Muselman paced the SAHS girls in 20 minutes, 50.13 seconds, for seventh place. Lauren Klaehn was 29th in 22:15 followed by Aleesha Goodwin (36th – 22:30), Allison Amstutz (39th – 22:42) and Katelin Hawbaker (44th – 23:03).
Brody Shane posted a time of 16:49 to take 26th place for the Starfire boys. Also running for SAHS were Joel Hawbaker (81st – 17:41), Sawyer Miller (128th – 18:02), Cody Sprunger (135th – 18:06) and Andrew Steffen (154th – 18:16).

Boys soccer loses
WOODBURN — The Starfires gave up five first-half goals Saturday in a 7-1 loss to the host Woodlan Warriors.
I Sar helped bury South Adams in the first half as he scored three times for the Warriors (8-3-1). He added a fourth score in the second half.
Dustin Dellinger connected on the only goal for the Starfires (2-10-1) in the first half.
Ar Ma helped Sar with two goals and two assists, and Sa Ra Ju Din added one goal and a pair of assists.

Football falls
BERNE — South Adams couldn’t hold its lead following a nearly two-hour delay Friday, falling 19-7 to the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.
The Starfires (1-5) took a 7-0 lead on Sam Dellinger’s 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter before lightning stopped the game with 3:32 left in the first half. When the game resumed after a 1-hour, 46-minute delay, Adams Central scored three second-half touchdowns to claim the win.
Alex Bylerly pulled the Flying Jets (3-3) even on an 87-yard scoring pass from Dalton Combs five minutes into the third quarter, and Kurt Blake (82 yards on 18 carries) and Combs added TD runs in the fourth quarter. Combs completed four passes for 141 yards.
Derek Wanner ran 16 times for 146 yards to pace South Adams.

MS girls dominate
FORT WAYNE — South Adams Middle School’s girls cross country team clobbered a 12-team field in the small-school girls race at Saturday’s New Haven Invitational, winning with a score of 19 points. Westview was second with 73.
The boys team was seventh out of 11 teams with 175 points while Westview won with 25.
Olivia Von Gunten finished seventh overall in the girls race and was first among the small-school runners with a time of 16 minutes, 5.73 seconds. Eliza Haruff was 24th (third) in 17:22, Hannah Coates finished 35th (fourth) in 17:39, Kara Seffernick placed 39th (fifth) in 17:44 and Hadi Hawbaker took 43rd (sixth) in 17:59.
Wyatt Miller led the boys team in 62nd place overall (13th small school) in 16:26. Briar Goodwin placed 110th in 17:13 ahead of Kadin Gerber (117th – 17:23), Logan Stephenson (193rd – 19:03) and Kyler Adams (268th – 21:57).
