Smith earns All-Conference honors for Ravens (10/25/03)
Collegiate check-up
Erin Smith finished a third outstanding year with the Anderson University golf team by winning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors.
The junior Jay County graduate led the Ravens to a third place finish at the HCAC meet recently at Royal Highlands Golf Course in Knightstown. She scored a team-best with a two-day total of 165 as Anderson finished with a team score of 714 behind Franklin and Manchester.
Smith had a first-day 80 to put her in third place midway through the tournament. She shot an 85 on day two to finish fifth, earning All-HCAC honors.
She led Anderson in scoring in every meet this year.
Rose winning again
After back-to-back losses, Cameron Hummel and the Rose-Hulman football team got back on track last week with a 30-10 win over Millsaps College.
Hummel, a 2003 Jay County graduate, was again a huge part of the offense from his quarterback position. He hit on 12-of-25 passing attempts for 183 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Clint Hammes in the second quarter which put the Engineers on top for good.
The freshman carried the ball four times for 29 yards.
Rose-Hulman lost to Rhoades College a week earlier, 28-16. Hummel was 6-of-13 passing for 69 yards in that game as he split time with sophomore Jason Dickey.
He also had a 1-yard touchdown run.
Hummel has gone 77-for-164 for 844 yards and six touchdowns so far this season. He has also amassed 367 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Former Pats leading Anderson
A pair of former Jay County players continue to lead the Anderson University volleyball team, witch is now 20-8 on the year.
Libby Michael, a junior, and Jenni Little, a sophomore played key roles in the Ravens’ most recent victory over Bluffton.
Michael had a team-best 15 digs in the match, and also had a pair of assists. Little finished with five kills and one solo block.
Their best match over the last two weeks came as Michael had 25 digs and Little smashed eight kills in a victory over Rose-Hulman Oct. 16.
Michael continues to top the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with her defensive play. She has 499 digs for an HCAC-best average of 5.61 digs per game.
She ranks 20th in the nation in that category.
Steiner still tackling
Former South Adams Starfire Scott Steiner has added a few more tackles to his resume in each of his last two games for the Bluffton College football team.
Steiner had a pair of tackles in the Beavers’’ loss to Anderson Oct. 11, including a sack for a loss of seven yards. He also had four tackles in a defeat against Hanover last week.
The junior ranks fourth on the team in tackles with 31 so far this season.
Bye places fourth
Caleb Bye had his best recent finish as he placed fourth in the three-meter diving event in Clemson’s loss to Georgia Oct. 18.
Bye, who graduated from Jay County in May, scored a 256.27 for his fourth-place finish. He was also fifth in the one-meter event against Georgia with a score of 248.62.
He added fifth-place finishes in both the one- and three-meter events in a Clemson victory over South Carolina two days earlier.
Conrad 12th at Anderson
South Adams graduate Christy Conrad helped the Taylor cross country to a second-place finish at the Anderson Invitational recently. The junior was fifth on the team and 12th overall with a time of 21:49.
Fulkerson running, catching
Former Jay County player Paul Fulkerson picked up a few more yards for the Tri-State football team in the last two games.
Fulkerson caught one pass for three yards in a loss to Wisconsin Lutheran last week. He also rushed twice for 16 yards in a defeat to Andrian a week earlier.[[In-content Ad]]
