Smith sparkles as Tribe tops Houston (04/07/04)

Local Roundup

Julie Smith just came up with another gem.

The Fort Recovery senior still has not allowed an earned run in three games this season as she pitched the Indians’ softball team to a 6-2 victory over the host Houston Wildcats Tuesday.

Smith, coming off a combined no-hitter with freshman Tiff Gaerke Saturday, allowed two unearned runs in seven innings as she improved to 2-0 on the year. She struck out four and walked three to help lift the Tribe to 3-1.

The Tribe grabbed the lead with a run in the first inning, and then added five more in the top of the fourth. Houston scored both of its runs in the bottom of the frame.

Fort Recovery bashed Houston with a varied offensive attack which saw nine different players get at least one hit.

Junior catcher Brenda Rindler smacked a two-run double, and senior shortstop Lisa Grisez had one hit, two runs, one RBI and one stolen base. Junior third baseman Krystal Rammel also knocked an RBI double

Renee Evers, Kim Link and Jenny Lauber each notched a pair of hits. Link had a double, Evers scored once and added a stolen base and Lauber had a run and an RBI.

The Indians are off until Friday when they will host Fort Loramie at 5 p.m.

Stars win first

The South Adams baseball team jumped on top quickly Tuesday, scoring four runs in the first inning on the way to a 5-2 season-opening win over the Winchester Golden Falcons.

The Starfires added one run in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-0 before Winchester scored a pair in the top of the seventh.

Craig Neuenschwander got the big hit for the South Adams offense, belting a three-run home run in the first inning. Doug Roop finished 2-for-2 with a run and a stolen base.

Kyle Neuenschwander and Justin Caffee each had a run and an RBI, and Kyle White added an RBI double and a run scored.

Caffee also took the win as four different pitchers worked for coach Dean Stahly. Caffee went two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four and walking five.

Aaron Givens and Kyle Neuenschwander each tossed two scoreless innings of relief before the Golden Falcons tagged Tyler Sprunger with a pair of runs in the seventh.

South Adams will look to stay unbeaten when it hosts Blackford today at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
