Soccer tourney moved

HARTFORD CITY - The entire Blackford boys soccer sectional will be contested Saturday after both semifinal games Thursday were postponed because of rain.

Jay County and South Adams high schools will play their semifinal contest at noon. The host Bruins and Union City will open tournament play Saturday at 10 a.m.

The semifinal winners will return to Blackford Saturday at 7 p.m. for the championship game.

Jay County defeated South Adams 5-0 and Union City 9-3 during the regular season. Blackford defeated the Patriots 4-1.

Chief gridders win

Andrew McShane's 2-point conversion run lifted the East Jay Middle School's seventh grade football team to a 16-14 victory Thursday over Driver (Winchester). The eighth grade team rolled to a 28-8 victory.

McShane hit Taylor Garringer with the game-tying touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal with four seconds left to complete a rally from a 14-0 deficit and then ran in for the winning conversion. He also scored the Chiefs' first TD on a 12-yard run, and Jake Carpenter ran nine times for 57 yards and had four tackles.

Zach Metcalfe ran for two TDs in the eighth grade team's victory as it improved to 5-1.

Ryan Tinkham added a third scoring run, and Jason Houston had a TD reception.

EJ 7th, 8th victorious

MUNCIE - East Jay Middle School's eighth grade volleyball team improved to 14-6 Thursday with a 25-18, 25-21 victory over Muncie Wilson, and the seventh graders won 25-18, 18-25, 15-8.

The sixth graders lost 25-18, 25-11.

Katlin Petro's six kills, five points and two blocks led the eighth grade Chiefs, and Abbi Dunlavey had five kills, five points and two blocks. Tasya Smith totaled nine digs, and Baily Weatherhead scored eight points.

Jessica Kerrigan and Michelle Wellman each had seven points and three aces for the seventh graders (15-5). Kerrigan added four assists.

Catherine Dunn and Breanne McIntire added two kills and two digs apiece.

Ava Kunkler had five points, including four aces, for the sixth graders. Abby Reier added four points.

The seventh and eighth grade squads also defeated Hartford City Wednesday.

Petro had team highs of seven kills and two blocks to go along with nine points for the eighth graders. Ali Inman scored 14 points and put up four assists, Dunlavey had six kills and two blocks and Smith totaled eight digs.

Jessica Kerrigan served out the first game of the seventh grade match and led the Chiefs with 25 points and 14 aces. Catherine Dunn added 12 points and five kills.[[In-content Ad]]
