Somers slam lifts JC over No. 8 Braves (05/27/05)

Jay County roundup

DECATUR — After riding a roller coaster most of the year, the Jay County baseball team couldn’t have found a better way to cap the regular season. It won its third straight game Thursday to pull to .500, and did so against the eighth-ranked team in Class 3A.

Thanks in part to a senior’s sixth-inning grand slam, the Patriots knocked off the Bellmont Braves 9-7.

Jay County (12-12) grabbed a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, but fell behind 4-3 in the fifth. Then came the grand slam.

Trent Bailey, Chad Keen and John Retter got on base in the sixth inning, and Eric Somers delivered a two-out grand slam.

The homer put the Patriots ahead for good, as Bellmont scored once in the bottom of the sixth and each team scored twice in the seventh.

Somers was one of four Patriots to finish with two or more hits. Bailey went 3-for-3 with three runs, Retter had two hits and three RBIs, and Locke also had two hits.

Josh Atkinson got the win as he struck out eight batters.

Jay wins 10th straight

MONROE — The Patriots have a double-digit win streak for the second straight season.

Jay County’s boys golf team won its 10th match in a row Thursday, rolling over the Adams Central Flying Jets 155-173. They are now 11-1 on the year following a 13-0 season in 2004.

Tyler Johnston and Nathan McClung shared match medalist honors with Korbin Davis of the Jets as they finished with 2-over-par 38s. Johnston had bogeys on the first and third holes, but finished with six consecutive pars. McClung had five pars in his round, and added a birdie on the par-4 seventh hole.

Adam Foster was just one stroke back of the top three at 39, and Alex Hunt rounded out the team score as he birdied the ninth hole for a 40. Ben Freeman shot a 41.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also defeated Adams Central, 201-221. James Brosher and Justen Moser set the pace with matching 49s.[[In-content Ad]]
