South Adams defeats Trojans (09/20/07)

FORT WAYNE - The South Adams High School boys tennis team picked up its second victory of the season Wednesday, topping the Fort Wayne Elmhurst Trojans 4-1.

No. 1 singles player Brett Wagner put together a huge rally in the Starfire victory. After dropping his first set in shutout fashion, he bounced back to top Ryan Fuller 0-6, 7-5, 7-5.

South Adams won both doubles matches, with Landyn Waugh and Kyle Schmidt just missing a shutout as they beat Todd Cooley and Chad Beck 6-0, 6-1. Jacob Smith and Daniel Dynes took the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 6-4 over Curtis Williams and Lucas Snyder.

Chase Ingle defeated Vincent Rowald 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The only loss for the Starfires came at No. 3 singles, where Kegan Sprunger fell 6-0, 6-4 to Adam Sullivan.

Redi Zurcher dropped the lone junior varsity match 8-6 to Jackson Warren.

West Jay tops Bears

PARKER CITY - Krisha Barber led the West Jay Middle School volleyball team as it bumped above .500 with a 25-24, 22-25, 15-10 win over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.

Barber scored four points in each of the final two games for the Eagles (4-3) to finish off a nine-point night. Danielle Newsome had six of her seven points in the opening game, and Shannon Springer finished with four points.

Chiefs clobber Wilson

Cody Bellis scored a pair of touchdowns Tuesday as East Jay Middle School's football teams crushed Muncie Wilson. Bellis' two scores came in the seventh grade team's 30-0 victory, and the eighth grade team rolled to a 22-6 win.

Bellis opened the scoring late in the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run, and also had a 10-yard TD in the third. Cade Price added to the 16-0 Chief lead with a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Daniel Walter finished the scoring with a 27-yard TD run on the game's final play.

Jacob McGraw's 15-yard TD reception from Andrew Duke gave the EJMS eighth graders the lead in the opening quarter. They never trailed, as Matt Taylor added a 10-yard scoring run midway through the second, and Julian Myers reached the end zone on a 9-yard run in the fourth.

The East Jay' seventh graders are 4-0 on the season, and the eighth grade team is 2-2.

Lennartz is runner-up

COWAN - Liz Lennartz led the West Jay Middle School cross country teams, finishing second in the girls race at the Cowan Invitational.

The sixth and seventh grade boys finished in fourth place at the meet Wednesday. The Eagles do not have enough girls or eighth grade boys runner for a team score.

Lennartz turned in the top West Jay finish as the runner-up in the 28-girl field with a time of 13-minutes, 47 seconds. Miranda Gerber was right behind her teammate in third place at 13:49.

Dylan Friddle topped the Eagles in the eighth grade boys race in seventh at 14:00, and Kyle Selvey led the sixth and seventh grade boys as he took ninth in 13:05. Joining Selvey for the fourth-place finish were Lee Mock (16th - 15:39), Levi Pitser (20th - 16:26), Dan Miller (21st - 16:31) and Jon Lowe (23rd - 18:40).

Joining Friddle in the eighth grade boys race for West Jay were Zach Johnson (eighth - 15:34), Zac Pitser (15th - 17:30) and Kyle Murdock (17th - 18:33).

JC JV smacks Raiders

The Jay County High School junior varsity football team rolled to a 46-6 victory Monday over the Shenandoah Raiders.

Scott Houston paced the Patriots (4-1) with three touchdown passes along with one rushing TD. He tossed two scoring strikes to Colton Lombardo, and one to Jerid Conatser.

Derek Hamilton also had a touchdown on the ground while the special teams and defense contributed scores as well. Michael Daniels returned a punt for a score, and Josh Bentz hand an interception return for a touchdown.

Patriot freshmen win

GASTON - Zach Cash was in on all the scoring Tuesday for the Jay County freshman football team as it picked up its first win of the season, 20-2 over the host Wes-Del Warriors.

Cash tossed touchdown passes to Brendan Reed and Anthony Skeens for the Patriots (1-4). He also had a rushing touchdown, after which Skeens scampered in for the two-point conversion.

Eagles roll to 4-0

DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School seventh grade football team stayed perfect on the season with a 22-8 win Tuesday over the Blackford Bruins. The eighth grade team lost to Blackford, 38-0.

Luke Wiemer had a 13-yard run for the West Jay seventh graders (4-0), who also have wins of 34-6 over Winchester, 39-0 over Wes-Del and 30-12 against New Castle this year. Tyler Back tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Dustin Tighe, and Jacob Harter added a 1-yard scoring run.

The loss to Blackford dropped the Eagle eighth grade team to 0-4, including shutout losses against Winchester and Wes-Del. It also lost 38-12 to New Castle, with Calvin Wyatt scoring on a 4-yard run and hitting Blake Crouch with a 60-yard TD pass in the game.[[In-content Ad]]
