South Adams falls in sectional final (02/16/2009)

BERNE - The best season in six years for the South Adams High School girls basketball team came to a close Saturday night.

The host Starfires lost 62-27 in the sectional championship game to the Class 2A No. 8 Bishop Luers Knights.

The title game was never in doubt as Bishop Luers, the defending sectional champion and 2008 regional finalist, led 21-3 after the opening quarter. The Saints pushed their lead to 34 points after three quarters as they ran their record to 16-8.

Senior Ashton Morgan was the lone SAHS player in double figures as she scored 11 points. Karen Bollenbacher had five points, and Tara Beitler scored four.

The Starfires finished at 8-13, tying the 2002-03 team for the most wins since SAHS finished 10-12 in 2001. South Adams had not won a sectional game since 2003, and had not appeared in a sectional finale since 2001.

FR freshmen win

LIMA, Ohio - Fort Recovery High School's freshman girls basketball team came home with a 34-30 victory Saturday over Lima Central Catholic.

Ericka Lennartz led the Indians to the victory with 18 points. Michelle Evers added seven points.

Indians advance

Two Fort Recovery Middle School basketball teams advanced in tournament action Saturday. The eighth grade girls defeated Versailles 32-23 in the Midwest Athletic Conference quarterfinal round, and the seventh grade boys topped St. Mary's in the opening round of the McKirnan Classic.

Janelle Schwieterman scored 15 points to lead the girls team, which shut out the Tigers in the opening period. Chelsea Pottkotter had seven points and Kelsey Fiely scored six for the Indians (11-2).

Bobby Mattraw powered the boys with 17 points as they outscored St. Mary's in every quarter. The Tribe (12-2) also got 10 points from Alex Kaiser.[[In-content Ad]]
