South Adams falls to Lions (02/17/2009)

BERNE - South Adams High School's boys basketball team fell short of its fifth straight win Saturday, losing 61-56 to the visiting Leo Lions.

The Starfires (7-9, 2-4 Allen County Athletic Conference) rallied in the final three minutes, but could not overcome a 17-point deficit. They had not lost since Jan. 23 against Garrett.

Nick Teeter led SAHS, which finished the game on a 16-4 run, with 21 points. Caleb Armenta added 17 points and four steals, but no other Starfire had more than four points.

Cody Meshberger had seven rebounds, and Heath Moser grabbed six.

Luke Pepple led Leo (13-4, 5-2 ACAC) to the victory with 21 points and six rebounds. Jordan Bowerman had 14 points and five boards, and Patrick Moreau scored 12 points.

In junior varsity action, Taylor Smith scored nine points for the Starfires as they fell 44-31 to Leo.

FR ends season

Fort Recovery's freshman girls basketball team ended its season Monday with a 26-21 loss to the St. John's Blue Jays.

Ericka Lennartz had eight points to lead the Indians, who finished at 6-5. Christen Wendel and Taylor Guggenbiller added four points apiece.

Dunn leads EJMS

GAS CITY - East Jay Middle School's sixth grade basketball teams split their games Monday at R.J. Baskett.

The girls team brought home a 30-16 victory while the boys lost 35-25.

Catherine Dunn had 14 points to lead the Chief girls, who improve to 8-1. Alexis Myers grabbed nine rebounds, and Malarie Houck had eight points.

Zach Pryor had 10 points for the EJMS boys. Justin Dirksen followed with five.

In B team action, Larissa Boles scored six points to lead the girls to a 19-4 win. Joey Link had seven points in the boys' 24-22 loss.

Eagle 6th falls

DUNKIRK - The West Jay sixth grade girls basketball team lost 37-20 Monday to Hartford City.

Dakotah Chambers totaled seven points to lead the Eagles. Tyra Westlake added six points.

Ashley Lowe scored eight points as the B team won 35-13.

Six make state

FORT WAYNE - Six members of the Jay County Winter Swim Team recorded state-qualifying times this weekend at the Polar Bear Plunge Invitational.

James Keen earned the lone victories among the male participants for Jay County winning the 11-12-year-old boys 100 backstroke in 1-minute, 10.97 seconds to qualify for state. He was also first in the 50 freestyle.

Sidney Sprunger was the only female winner as she posted a state-qualifying time of 34.26 in the girls 9-10-year-old 50 backstroke.

Other state qualifiers were Alex Bader, Caroline Kloepper, Katy Smeltzer and Cady Farlow. Alex Bader, Sophie Bader, Farlow, Smeltzer and Anne Vormohr each finished in the top three in at least one event.[[In-content Ad]]
