South Adams girls lose third in a row (11/24/03)

The South Adams girls basketball team suffered two more losses of more than 20 points this weekend to slip to 0-3 on the season.

The Starfires started Friday with a 62-39 defeat at the Eastbrook Panthers. They came home Saturday for a 67-41 loss against the Class A No. 5 Union City Indians.

Both squads struggled to get going Saturday, scoring just four points apiece in the first quarter. But, Union City (3-0) grabbed a seven-point lead at the intermission.

The Indians just continued to build on the advantage, outscoring South Adams 25-14 in the third quarter and 19-11 in the fourth. Shawndrea Montgomery had 28 points to pace Union City, and Abby Doppler followed with 12.

Kelly Mertz led South Adams with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Brittany Moser also scored 12 points, and Erin McCollum added nine points.

Eastbrook (3-0) dominated the second and third quarters to take the victory over the Starfires. The Panthers scored 25 points in the second period for a 12-point lead at the half, and outscored South Adams 18-4 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Mertz had a double-double to pace the Starfires, finishing with team highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals.

Julie Muhlenkamp followed with nine points and six boards.

Carla Fisher paced Eastbrook with 13 points. Alexis Shankwiler and Jena Martin had 11 and 10 points respectively.

South Adams won the junior varsity game over Eastbrook 35-23. The Starfires lost in JV action against Union City, 42-35.

South Adams will try again for its first win at home Friday against Bluffton at 6 p.m.

JC wrestlers 2-3

Kurtis Hess and Tyler Bash were both perfect on the day Saturday as the Jay County wrestling team finished 2-3 at the New Castle six-way.

The Patriots’ victories came against Olympic Athletic Conference rival Huntington North by a 54-25 score and Vincennes Lincoln 45-32. They lost to the host Trojans 43-33, Columbus East 45-24 and Westfield 48-22.

Hess went 5-0, including a 12-8 win over Michael Bennett of New Castle. Bennett was the 15th-ranked 140-pounder in the state before running up against Hess.

Bash also had a 5-0 day in the heavyweight division.

Five other wrestlers finished above .500 on the day. Michael Enyart (135), Trent Bash (145), Justin Adams (152), Bill Spahr (160) and Robert Ralston (171) all ended the competition at 3-2.

The Patriots next action will be at home Wednesday Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. against Muncie Southside.[[In-content Ad]]
