South Adams girls smack Blackhawk Christian (01/24/07)

BERNE - South Adams did not let its losing streak get to double digits.

The Starfire girls basketball team put an emphatic end to its slump Tuesday, clobbering the visiting Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian Braves 57-37. It was their first win since topping Muncie Burris Nov. 30.

Senior Kayla Coblentz keyed the South Adams victory with a new quadruple-double. She reached double figures in two categories, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She just missed in two others as she totaled nine assists and nine steals.

South Adams (3-13) took control of the game in the opening quarter when it outscored the Braves 16-4. The remaining periods were relatively close, but Blackhawk (3-13) never mounted a comeback.

Following Coblentz for the Starfires were Bethany Balsiger with 12 points and Holly Kaup with eight. Jordan Lehman and Jodie Muhlenkamp each grabbed eight rebounds.

South Adams also won the junior varsity game, 30-19, with Erica Coblentz scoring a game-high eight points.

JC freshmen cruise

MONROE - Jay County's freshman boys basketball team scored more points in the opening quarter than the Adams Central Jets did in the entire game as it took a 43-15 victory.

The Patriots pushed to a 17-3 lead after the opening period and had an 18-point advantage at the half. Brad Horn scored all of his game-high 11 points in the opening half as he hit three 3-pointers.

Josh Beaty also reached double figures with 10 points, and John Pettus and Eric Homan each added eight.

Adams Central was led by Ben Mishler's nine points.

Chief grapplers dominate

HARTFORD CITY - The host Blackford Bruins proved no match for the East Jay Middle School wrestling team Tuesday as the Chiefs rolled to an 81-12 win.

East Jay racked up 10 pins, including a victory by Kyle Davidson (125) in just 25 seconds. Austin Bentz (100), Chandler Stout (105) and Nick Leonhard (110) finished off their matches in 27, 28 and 33 seconds respectively.

Also adding pins for the Chiefs were Tanner Schlicter (115), Dyllan Derrickson (120), Vince Garcia (135), Justin Wygant (145), Andre Duke (152) and Micah Boyer (160).

Matt Seagraves (90) won his match by decision.

Wil Skiver (115) earned one of four junior varsity wins in 45 seconds.

FR teams earn 2nd wins

FORT RECOVERY - Fort Recovery's junior high boys basketball teams each came up with their second victory of the season Tuesday. The eighth graders made it two in a row with a 36-24 win over the Ansonia Tigers, and the seventh graders scored a 41-33 triumph.

The Tribe eighth grade team (2-8) trailed 10-4 after the opening period, but then scored 18 points in the second quarter. It limited the Tigers to just five points in the second and third periods.

Shane Brunswick led the victory with 11 points, and John Homan joined him in double figures with 10.

Jared Kahlig finished with 18 points for the Fort Recovery seventh graders (2-8), who outscored Ansonia 15-4 in the third quarter to take command. Jacob Whitacre added nine points.

Eagle girls push to 5-1

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's sixth grade girls basketball team shut out Union City Westside in the opening quarter Tuesday as it scored a 35-10 win.

The Eagles pushed to a 21-point lead at the half as they improved to 5-1.

Taylor Franklin outscored Westside by herself as she finished with 11 points. Shelby Shirk and Megan Price each added eight points.

Franklin also had eight points in West Jay's 11-10 victory in the B team game.

Tribe drops heartbreakers

MARIA STEIN, Ohio - Fort Recovery's junior high girls basketball teams each scored 30 points Tuesday, but the Marion Local Flyers had just a little bit more. The Tribe dropped the eighth grade game 31-30 and the seventh grade contest 32-30.

Kendra Brunswick scored 14 points for the Indian eighth graders (7-4). Holly Brunswick and Olivia Thien each had four points.

Kelly Nietfeld paced the Fort Recovery seventh grade team with 11 points. Olivia Schwieterman added seven points, and Kylie Kahlig finished with six.[[In-content Ad]]
