South Adams holds on to beat Patriots by one (05/12/05)

BERNE — South Adams’s softball team has had a knack for comeback wins this year. Wednesday it avoided having the tables turned.
The Starfires limited Jay County to one seventh-inning run to hold on for an 8-7 victory over the Patriots.
South Adams, which scored three runs in the second and fifth innings, moved back above the .500 mark with the win at 9-8.
Both teams also learned their tournament fate when the sectional draw was held Wednesday.
Alyssa Miller had only one hit, but sparked the Starfire offense with two runs and two RBIs. Renee Neuenschwander racked up three runs, Miranda Potts drove in two and Kindle Inniger had two hits.
Amber Melick picked up the win, allowing seven runs — three earned — on seven hits.
Shae Keller gave up eight runs — four earned — on nine hits to take the loss for Jay County, which had given Class 3A No. 8 Blackford all it could handle Tuesday night.
Trisha Champ finished 2-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI for the Patriots. Chelsea DeBoy drove in two runs, and Morgan Locke had a pair of hits.
Jay County’s tournament play will begin against Mississinewa at Blackford Monday, May 23 at 7 p.m. That game will follow the sectional opener between the host Bruins and Elwood at 5 p.m.
The opening-round winners will play each other Tuesday, May 24 at 5 p.m. The second semifinal game will game will follow with Tipton going up against Delta at 7 p.m.
The championship game is scheduled for Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m.
South Adams will play the opening game of the Adams Central sectional against Fort Wayne Harding Tuesday, May 24 at 4:45 p.m. Bluffton will meet Woodlan in the other first-round game Wednesday, May 25 at 4:45 p.m.
The winners of the two first-round contests will play Saturday, May 28 at 10 a.m. in the first of two semifinal games. Heritage and the host Jets, both of which drew byes, will battle in the second semifinal game at noon.
