Jay girls drop opener

Jay County’s girls soccer team carried a 1-0 lead through most of the first half, but dropped a 3-1 decision in its season opener against the host Heritage Patriots Thursday.
Jamie Bruggeman started Jay County toward its first goal of the season with a shot nearly midway through the first half. Heritage’s goalie saved it, but the ball popped out of her arms and junior Kristie Burke was there to put the visiting team up 1-0. Burke’s second career goal came at the 21:29 mark.
Jay County (0-1) held the advantage for most of the rest of the first half before Amy Woenkhaus scored in similar fashion. She followed her own shot as it bounced out of goalie Chelsea DeBoy’s hands and knocked it in to tie the game with 1:10 to go.
Heritage took control in the second half, scoring two more goals as it outshot Jay County 9-2. Breanna Conrad put her team ahead nine minutes into the half on an assist from Kristen Gallmeyer, and Jill Klingenberger added a score as she lobbed a shot just over DeBoy’s hands at the 1:41 mark.
