South Adams stomps Tigers (09/19/07)

BLUFFTON - The South Adams High School boys cross country team rolled to victory by an 18-44 count Tuesday over the Bluffton Tigers. The SAHS girls were in position to do the same, but did not have enough runners for a team score.

Nathan Rupp won the boys race for the Starfires, who packed six runners in the top seven for the easy win. He took first place in 18-minutes, 8 seconds.

Aaron Lehman was the runner-up for South Adams. Sam Heckard took fourth place, Justin Sommer was fifth and Gabe Sprunger finished sixth.

The Starfire girls were also impressive as the only three runners for the team all finished in the top five. Taylor Turner won the race in 23:40 with Anne Lehman in third and Carson Shane fifth.

Hannah Moore finished first in 12:14 to lead the South Adams Middle School girls team to a 16-47 victory. Evan Liechty's time of 11:09 was good for first place in the boys race as the Starfires won 18-45.

Railroaders top spikers

BERNE - South Adams' volleyball team swiped a game from the visiting Garrett Railroaders, but couldn't pick up its second Allen County Athletic Conference victory as it fell 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23.

Karen Bollenbacher paced the Starfires in the tight match with 12 kills and two blocks. Jacie Yoder put up 30 assists, and Andrea Moser posted a team-best 22 digs.

Maranda Potts had 20 digs and a pair of aces, Whitney Ellinger notched 10 kills and Hali Feaster added nine kills.

South Adams also dropped the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-22.

EJ eight tops Driver

WINCHESTER - The East Jay Middle School eighth grade volleyball team came up big in the third and deciding game for a 20-25, 25-24, 15-11 victory over host Winchester Driver. The seventh graders lost in three games, 25-19, 24-25, 15-8.

Mariah Hornaday and Maria Murphy each finished with six points, three kills and two blocks to lead the eighth graders (5-2). Megan May and Danielle Wellman had three kills and three digs apiece, and Kassi Hemmelgarn put up seven assists.

Hannah Ainsworth powered the seventh grade team (5-2) with six points, including five aces, and four assists. Rachelle Jackson had eight points and two digs, and Jill Dirksen totaled six points and four digs.

Lions defeat SA

BERNE - Scoreless first halves Tuesday doomed the South Adams Middle School football teams as the eighth graders fell 30-14 to the Leo Lions and the seventh graders lost 28-0.

The eighth grade team (2-2) trailed 22-0 at the half before Marcus Rich got them on the board with a 90-yard kickoff return.

Rich, who finished with 120 yards on seven rushing attempts, also scored on a 60-yard run. Cole Farlow led the defense with eight tackles.

South Adams' seventh grade team trailed 14-0 after the opening quarter and never mounted a comeback. Blake Fox ran six times for 20 yards, and Cassidy Huntley had four tackles and a fumble recovery.

Ashman is club champ

GENEVA - Mike Ashman built an insurmountable lead.

Ashman had a six-stroke lead after the opening round as he won the Wabash Valley Golf Course Club Championship recently with a 36-hole total of 149. He put up a 70 in his opening round on the way to a six-stroke victory over Stan Minnich in the championship flight.

Ron Sprunger won the first flight with matching 81s for his 162, Jeff Sprunger turned in an 84 in his closing round to win the second flight at 176 and Alan Baumgartner shot a second-round 79 to take the senior flight with a 165.
