South Adams swimmers stay perfect vs. AC (12/2/03)

Local Roundup

No seniors? No problem.

At least that’s been the case for the South Adams swim teams — which have no seniors on the roster — so far this season.

The girls team cruised to its fourth straight win to open the year, crushing the Adams Central Jets Monday 111-59. The boys team won its home opener Monday 77-43 over Adams Central.

Both squads were led by a Lehman, with Heath and Haleigh each winning two individual events and contributing to a pair of relay victories.

Haleigh, a freshman, dominated the 100-yard freestyle, winning by nearly five seconds over teammate Talitha Maven in a time of 1-minute, 5.76 seconds. She also took a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:12.75.

She also teamed with Ashley Gresla, Robyn Habegger and Chelsea Yoder to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:56.41, and joined Margaret Beymer, Talitha Maven and Whitney Liechty for a time of 4:28.68 to take first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Habegger, Liechty, Chelsea Yoder and Channing Yoder teamed for the other relay win in the 200-yard medley relay.

Heath took care of the long distance races for the boys team. He finished the 200-yard freestyle in 2:12.04 to win by more than 20 seconds, and captured victory in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:57.40.

He joined Andy Lehman, Carson Sprunger and Drew Dull to take first in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay.

Freshman Lyle Kohler added two more individual wins for the boys, finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle. Sprunger was first in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Adding victories for the girls were Chelsea Yoder in the 50-yard freestyle and Liechty in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Starfires will be at home again Thursday to host Angola at 5:30 p.m.

Honored Stars

A pair of South Adams football players earned All-Allen County Athletic Conference honors this season.

Fullback/Linebacker Kyle White, a senior, and lineman Grant Moser, a sophomore, were each named to the All-ACAC first team Monday. Earning honorable mention were seniors Kyle Neuenschwander, Kyle Litwiller, Nick Moser and junior Michael Yoder.

Indians roll

The Fort Recovery freshman girls basketball team used a big first quarter on the way to a 30-22 victory over the Spencerville Bearcats Monday.

The Indians opened the season with a 12-2 advantage in the first quarter and never relinquished the lead. They were up 18-7 at halftime and cruised to the eight-point victory.

Sam Staugler led the Tribe, scoring more than half of her team’s points as she finished with 16. Lauren Wenning added eight points.

EJ splits pair

The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team pounded Winchester Driver 51-19 Monday, but the seventh grade team couldn’t muster enough offense as it fell to a 25-19 defeat.

The eighth grade Chiefs (2-0) jumped out to a 13-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and were never challenged.

Shelby Rines led the effort with 14 points and five rebounds. Cassandra Huelskamp scored nine points and also grabbed five boards.

Abby Loy and Dana Horn contributed eight points apiece.

Kaelee Keller scored six points as the East Jay seventh graders dropped to 0-2. Makenzie Loy finished with four points.
