South Adams ties Blackford

BERNE — The first goal of the season allowed the Starfires to avoid a third straight defeat.
The South Adams High School boys soccer team walked away with a tie Saturday, finishing in a 1-1 deadlock with the visiting Blackford Bruins.
The Starfires (0-2-1), who had been shut out 2-0 and 5-0 by New Haven and Bellmont in their first two games, got on the board first against Blackford when Lathan Luginbill scored off an assist from Dustin Dellinger and Marco Vasquez in the opening half.
Wyatt Maddox evened the score in the second half on an assist from Tryse Hendricks. Both teams had opportunities to take the victory, but neither was able to find the net again.
Dellinger and Vasquez each finished with four shots on goal for South Adams. L.J. Moser recorded 15 saves.
Netters split
FORT WAYNE — South Adams’ boys tennis team split its matches at Saturday’s Fort Wayne South Side Invitational, defeating Wayne 5-0 and falling 5-0 to Bishop Luers.
Dexter Miller and Brayden Myers cruised through their singles matches against Wayne. Miller won 6-0, 6-1 over Trey Lohman at No. 2, and Myers topped Mason Waggoner 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1.
The Starfires won the remaining matches against Wayne by forfeit.
Jared Rife and Dylan Pierce played the closest match for South Adams in its loss to Bishop Luers. They fell 6-1, 7-6 to the duo of Sam Scheer and Mark Hellinger.
Girls soccer falls
BERNE — The Starfires suffered their second shutout Saturday, falling 5-0 to the visiting Blackford Bruins.
Blackford took control with first-half goals from Chasity Jones, Katie Keifer and Casey Emerson. Allie Jennerjahn and Kayla Hartley added goals for the Bruins (1-1) in the second half, and Mallory Norris and Hayley Confer each had assists.
Samantha Sprunger and Rachel Simon finished with three shots on goal apiece for South Adams, which lost by shutout to Norwell in its season opener and is now 0-3. Alaina Johnston finished with 14 saves.[[In-content Ad]]
