South Adams wrestlers open with win

BERNE - The South Adams High School wrestling team dominated its opening match of the season Tuesday night, throttling the Allen County Athletic Conference rival Woodlan Warriors 53-12.

The Starfires won each of their first two matches of the evening by decision, and then Jim West (HWT) showed why he opened the season ranked sixth in the state. The 2009 state qualifier needed just 1 minute 12 seconds to pin Corey Kever.

Josh Ehr and Todd Batt, who also started the season ranked in the top 10, scored the other pins for SAHS. Ehr finished off Justin Morman in 2:45, and Batt pinned Trey Delegrance in 4:42.

L.J. Moser (103) and Nick Taylor (171) each added wins by technical fall, and John Striker (119) picked up a major decision. Winners by decision were Cody Conner (189), Drew Taylor (215) and Issac Werst (152).

SA boys hoops falls

FOUNTAIN CITY - Nick Teeter scored 33 points Tuesday, but the South Adams boys basketball team lost 73-63 in overtime to the host Northeastern Knights.

In a game with 18 lead changes, the Starfires (0-1) got outscored 12-2 in the overtime session.

Teeter went 6-of-11 from 3-point range and buried nine free throws on the way to his game-high total. He also had five rebounds.

Taylor Smith scored nine points, and Ben Meshberger had 10 rebounds.

Will Claywell paced Northeastern (1-0) with 22 points and 13 boards. Derek Blunk added 14 points and five rebounds.

In junior varsity action, Scott Hoeppner scored 14 points for SAHS in a 44-40 defeat.

Eagle 8th get win

UNION CITY - The West Jay Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team defeated host Westside 36-31 Tuesday. The seventh graders lost, 37-21.

Kyle Selvey scored 12 points to lead the Eagles, who got perfect free-throw efforts from Toby McCallister and Sam Selvey in the fourth quarter. Brock Farmer added nine points, and McCallister scored seven.

James Williams scored 10 points for the WJMS seventh graders. Dakota Pettus added five points.

Winter swimmers roll

MONROE - The Jay County Winter Swim Team clobbered host Adams Central Tuesday, winning 44 out of 48 individual events in a 453-297 victory.

Grady Sprunger and Eliza Bader each won three events in the 8-and-younger division, and Carley Stone and Noah Hummel picked up three victories apiece in the 9-10-year-old division. Caitlin Mark and James Keen were triple winners in the 13-and-older division, and Drew LeFever won three times in the 11-12-year-old division.

Ashley LeFever, Parker Collingsworth, Cori Stone, Sidney Sprunger, Ashley Mark, Jesse Sutton and Mackinley Timmerman added two wins apiece.

WJ girls fall

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's girls basketball team lost 34-22 Tuesday to visiting Montpelier.

Chelsea Tighe and Ashley Motter each scored six points in the defeat. Ashley Lowe added four points.[[In-content Ad]]
