Spahr captures third OAC crown (01/23/06)

ANDERSON — Bill Spahr won a title and eight other wrestlers finished 2-1. But the Patriots could not keep up with the host team.

Jay County’s wrestlers finished second at Saturday’s Olympic Athletic Conference tournament, suffering their lone defeat 51-18 to the host Anderson Highland Scots. The Patriots clobbered Connersville 70-11 and defeated Muncie Southside 39-33.

Spahr won his third OAC crown, finishing with a 3-0 record at 171 pounds. Kurt Hess (140) took just his second loss of the season to go 2-1 as one of Jay County’s eight second-place finishers.

Also placing second in the conference were Josh Lochtefeld, Ben Theurer, Sam Lyons, Kurt Hess, Matt Daniels, Robert Ralston, Tom Smith and Nathan Conatser.

Jay rolls at BSU

MUNCIE — Four members of the Jay County Winter Swim Team earned top point honors as the squad won the Ball State University Sprint Invitational Saturday. Jay County scored 1,932 points, far out-distancing the second-place Hancock Aquatic Team (1,482) at the six-team event.

Levi Hummel was the star of the day, winning each of his five events to dominate the 9-year-old boys division. He was first in the 50-yard butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 100 individual medley. Other high-point winners were Ellie Kaverman (8-and-younger girls), Caitlin Mark (10-year-old girls) and Mitchell Kaverman (11-year-old boys).

Mark scored wins in the 50 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 100 individual medley. Ellie Kaverman was first in the 25 breaststroke and 25 freestyle, and Mitchell Kaverman won the 200 individual medley.[[In-content Ad]]
