The scoring struggles continued Thursday for the Jay County High School girls soccer team in a 2-0 loss to the visiting Bellmont Squaws.
Bellmont took the lead about 14 minutes into the game when senior Jessica Brewer launched a shot from nearly 30 yards out. Patriot goalie Mollie May leapt and got a hand on the high shot to the left corner, but could not keep it out of the net.
The Squaws extended the lead to 2-0 on a goal at the 32:14 mark of the second half.
Jay County’s defense has allowed just four goals over the last five games, but are 0-3-2 during the span. The Patriots (1-5-3) have been shut out in four straight with their last goal coming Sept. 2 in a tie with Norwell.
Braves top JC boys
DECATUR — Jay County’s boys soccer team trailed just 1-0 at the half Thursday, but the host Bellmont Braves took control after the break for a 6-0 victory.
Bellmont needed nearly 27 minutes to score its first goal, and the tally remained 1-0 until the mid-point of the second half.
The Squaws pushed ahead 2-0 with a goal at the 20:08 mark, and then scored four times in the final 6:08 to pull away.
Austin Cowan finished with four saves for the Patriots (3-7), who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Colton Bartlett, Dillon Ainsworth, Alex Dunn and Trey Teagle each had one shot on goal.
Jay County and Bellmont tied 2-2 in junior varsity action with Zach Fullenkamp putting in both Patriot goals.
EJ football splits
The East Jay Middle School seventh grade football team improved to 2-0 Thursday with a 30-0 victory over visiting Union City Westside. The eighth grade squad lost, 26-12.
Michael Vanover scored three touchdowns on just four carries for the seventh grade Chiefs. Matthew Blackford added 64 rushing yards and scored a TD, and Alex Stout had a sack and a forced fumble.
Nick Clemons scored on a 2-yard run for the EJMS eighth grade team. He also connected with Jake Carpenter on a 20-yard TD pass.[[In-content Ad]]
