DUNKIRK — The Sharks took a chunk out of their deficit, but their comeback try fell short.
Ben Crouch’s goal in the fourth quarter sealed a 5-4 victory Saturday for the Squidz in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.
The Sharks scored the game’s opening goal, but the Squidz took a 2-1 lead into halftime and extended the advantage to 4-2 heading into the final period. Carter Fugiett came up with two goals in the fourth quarter to give the Sharks a chance at their first win, but Crouch (five goals) scored to give the Squidz the victory.
Also Saturday, Maddox Huffman racked up nine goals as he led the Sting Rays to a 10-2 win over the Whales. Pacie Denney tallied all of her team’s goals as the Hurricanes topped the Thunder 3-1.

Rockets win four
SOUTH BEND — Strong pitching and a big comeback gave the Portland Rockets a perfect weekend.
They blanked the South Bend Sultans 4-0 and 7-0 Saturday and knocked off the Michiana Scrappers 8-4 and 9-6 in eight innings Sunday to extend their winning streak to six games.
Portland rallied from a 6-0 deficit in game two against Michiana, tying it on a two-run home run by Billy Geeslin in the sixth inning. Tyler Geesaman gave the Rockets (18-6) the lead when he scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Geeslin earned the win in relief in the second game, and Dan Bollenbacher took the victory in the opener.
Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters and Michael Caley each went the distance in the shutouts, with Waters striking out 10 Sultans. Justin Marrero had three hits in each game.

Mickey Waters had a perfect day at the plate Sunday as he led All Circuit Electric to a 13-5 victory over J&P Plating in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Waters hit home runs in each of hits three trips to the plate and finished with seven RBIs. Sean Smith added three hits and three runs.
Sheldon Minch had two hits and four RBIs for J&P.
In the other Rookie baseball game Sunday, Tarron Bentz racked up three hits, three runs and three RBIs as Williams Auto Parts defeated Barnett’s Auto Parts 15-4. Mitchel Trobridge added three hits, three runs and two RBIs.
Barnett’s got two hits, three runs and an RBI from Isaac Braun.
On Friday, Cameron Clark scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single by Kaleb Elam as J&P defeated Ponderosa 17-16.
