Star boys 1st in ACAC

MONROE — Evan Liechty led the Starfire boys to the conference title, and Hannah Moore walked away with her third individual crown.
Liechty’s win in the boys race keyed the South Adams High School boys cross country team, which won the Allen County Athletic Conference meet hosted by Adams Central with 21 points Tuesday. Garrett was a distant second with 73.
Moore took the top spot in the girls race as the Starfires scored 61 points to finish as the runner-up behind Leo (53).
Liechty took the boys title with a time of 17 minutes, 4 seconds, and teammates Brody Shane and Joel Hawbaker finished second and third respectively in matching times of 17:13. Simon Sprunger was seventh for the Starfires in 17:48 to also earn all-ACAC first-team honors, and Carson Sprunger was eighth in 17:56.
Moore won her third ACAC championship in four seasons with a time of 20:28, and Kristen Muselman was second for the Starfires in 20:50.Jenna Smith placed seventh at 21:41.

Girls soccer ousted
FORT WAYNE — The Starfires’ season came to an abrupt end Tuesday as they fell 8-0 to the host Blackhawk Christian Braves in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A Section 37 tournament.
Blackhawk (10-2-1) scored all of its goals in the opening half, with the first two coming from senior Erin Okeson. Abby Carter, another senior, had two goals and an assist, and Rachel Wood also scored twice.
Rebecca Kampol, a freshman, had a goal and three assists, and Brittney Chalfant added one goal and one assist.

Jordan Brown made 10 saves for South Adams (4-11) in the loss. Rachel Simon and Alaina Johnston took one shot apiece.

Volleyball rolls
MONROEVILLE — South Adams rolled through the opening round of the Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday at Heritage, topping the Southern Wells Raiders 25-18, 25-19.
Alyssa Bluhm led the Starfires (7-17) to the victory with 11 assists and five kills. Lily Taing had nine assists and seven digs, and Chelsea Bollenbacher finished with eight kills and two blocks.

Gridders dominate
BERNE — The Starfires’ eighth grade football team crushed the visiting Harding Hawks 39-13 Tuesday, and the seventh graders picked up a 24-6 victory.
Drew LeFever scored on runs of 8 and 45 yards, a 67-yard kickoff return and a 75-yard fumble return for the SAMS eighth graders (2-4). Kody Coates added a 39-yard TD pass to Matt Hilton and a 20-yard scoring run, and Dillon Morningstar finished with seven tackles.
Blade Zeitvogel ran for 142 yards, including scoring runs of 13 and 43 yards, to power the seventh grade squad. Marc Teeter caught a 27-yard TD pass from Josh Lahr, Jayden Dull made a tackle for a safety and James Groh finished with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.[[In-content Ad]]
