GARRETT - A runner-up pairing led the Starfires to a runner-up team finish Saturday.
Allison Beitler and Hannah Moore teamed for second place at the Garrett Hokum-Karem, leading the South Adams High School girls cross country team to second place out of nine squads. The SAHS combined time was 199-minutes, 47 seconds, about eight minutes back of champion West Noble and 18 ahead of third-place Angola.
The South Adams boys finished third out of nine teams at 170:11. West Noble won at 157:02, and the host Railroaders (166:09) were second.
Beitler and Moore teamed for a time of 61:47 to finish in second place. Taylor Miller and Sawyer Shane were next for SAHS in sixth place at 67:21.
The best effort for the boys team came from Nathan Rupp and Aaron Lehman, who teamed for fourth place in 52:59. Sam Heckard and Gabe Sprunger (57:05) finished 13th.
Jay netters last
DEKALB - There were some positive steps for the Jay County tennis team Saturday, but the team result was the same.
After losing its opening two dual matches 5-0, the Patriots finished last out of eight teams at the DeKalb Invitational.
No. 2 singles player Kyle Simmons was the bright spot as he rallied after a first-round loss to defeat Henry Narmont of Bellmont 6-1, 6-3 and Mick Jager of West Noble 8-7 (8-6) to finish in fifth place. He is 2-3 on the season.
The only other victory for JCHS came at No. 1 doubles, where Adam Horn and Chase Wellman defeated Dirk Ormsby and Zac Parr of West Noble 6-3, 6-1. They finished 1-2 on the day, and Phil Powell, Jared Valentine and the team of Sam Miller and Tylor Smith each went 0-2.

DENVER - The South Adams volleyball team slipped to 0-5 Saturday, losing all four of its matches at the North Miami Tournament.
The Starfires managed to win just one game at the tournament. It came in their 23-25, 25-18, 16-14 loss to Oak Hill.
In other matches, SAHS fell 25-23, 25-20 to Rochester, 25-14, 25-17 to Northwestern and 25-12, 25-15 to North Judson.[[In-content Ad]]
