BERNE - For about three minutes, South Adams felt pretty good. Unfortunately for the Starfires, they still had to deal with Jay County for another 29.
The Patriots, ranked eighth in Class 3A, erased an early 5-0 deficit in just over a minute and sprinted up and down the court Saturday to throttle SAHS 82-42.
The victory pushed Jay County to 5-0 for the first time in school history.
"It feels great, but you know every team is going to give us their best shot so we've got to come out and play every game," said Patriot senior Rhett Retter, who led the sizzling shooting from the outside, was one of three players to reach double figures in the first half and finished with a career-high 20 points. "We've got a tough one next week with Southside."
Jay County went 0-for-2 with three turnovers in its first five possessions as the Starfires took the early lead, but that trend didn't last long.
Retter, who hit all of his four 3-point attempts and shared the game-high with six rebounds, erased the deficit with a pair of hoops off Scott "Scooter" Bruggeman's first two assists of the game. It was all Patriots from there as the visiting team stormed through South Adams' full-court defense. They routinely beat the Starfires down the floor, getting all kinds of easy lay-ups and wide-open looks from the outside.
The run-and-gun Jay County style keyed a 16-0 run bridging the first and second quarters. It added another 11-2 run in the second period as well as a 20-2 run in the third quarter.
"What really actually helped was we didn't play very good defense, they scored and got into their pressure and that kind of broke us open and allowed us to attack some things," said JCHS coach Craig Teagle. "If the ball is in Scott Bruggeman's hands you're pretty well off. That's not hard to coach. He takes it and he goes and he makes good decisions."
Bruggeman's good decisions led to seven assists. Fellow senior Corey Comer dished out five assists, and Billy Wellman added four.
Comer, who also had five rebounds, hit each of his first four field-goal attempts and finished 5-of-6. He, Retter and Wellman each had 12 points at halftime.
The Patriots hit an amazing two-thirds of their shots from the field, finishing 32-of-48. They were on fire from 3-point range for the second straight night - 7-of-8 - as Wellman went 3-for-3 from long range.
The last time a Jay County team broke the 80-point barrier was at Union City Feb. 20, 2004, when Trent Bailey hit a school-record nine 3-pointers.
"We shot 10-of-19 last night from 3-point for 53 percent, but we were 7-of-25 for 28 percent from the two," said Teagle. "If we've got good looks we've got pretty good shooters. Retter is an outstanding shooter, Billy Wellman is a really good shooter ... We've got kids we think can knock it down."
The Patriots put up at least 22 points in each of the opening three quarters and went almost exclusively to a junior varsity lineup in the fourth. Twelve different players scored for Jay County, which had a 31-23 rebounding advantage and forced 23 turnovers.
"I thought our kids played pretty hard at times, but we didn't play very smart," said South Adams coach Ryan Biegel, whose team dropped to 3-2. "I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that Jay County was just pressuring us that much because we hadn't seen pressure like that this year.
"I told my kids that I want them to remember this game. I don't want them to remember the score, what I want them to remember is what it felt like when they ran the ball down your throats, what it felt like when they blocked you out every single time. That's what I want teams to feel like after they play us."
Andrew Caffee was the only Starfire to reach double figures, finishing with 13 points. He also had six rebounds and one block.
Jordan Sharp finished with nine points and two assists.
Junior varsity
Jay County scored in double digits in every quarter as it topped the Starfires 55-44.
Adam Garringer scored 16 points for the Patriots, who outscored South Adams 29-18 during the middle two periods. Dexter Shreve followed with 10 points, and Aaron Daniels added seven.
Ethan Sharp paced south Adams with 12 points. Justin Armenta followed with eight points, and Ryan Moser and Nick Teeter each added seven.[[In-content Ad]]
