Star swimmers defeat Bellmont (01/04/05)

DECATUR — South Adams’ swim teams made a good return from the winter break with a couple of victories over Bellmont.

The Starfires won the girls competition Tuesday 120.5-62.5 and the boys 99-77.

Haleigh Lehman led the girls team as it nearly doubled up the Squaws, winning a pair of individual events. She was first in the shortest and longest races of the night, taking the 50-yard freestyle in 27.99 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 6-minutes, 7.21 seconds.

John Gresla and Matt Kruse each won a pair of events for the South Adams boys. Gresla took the 200 freestyle in 2:07.04 and the 500 freestyle in 5:49.21, and Kruse finished first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.91 and the 100 freestyle in 50.77.

Other winners for SAHS were Jessica Sharp, Margaret Beymer, Courtney Hewitt, Lacy Rhoades. Justin Klopp, Shane Swygart and Kyle Affolder.

He’s No. 2

Jockey Rodney Prescott wrapped up the best season of his career Saturday night with a total of 340 wins — good for second in the nation behind Russell Baze.

Prescott, a Jay County native, finished 35 wins behind Baze’s nation-best total of 375. Eddie Castro, who was No. 3 on the national list, had 329 wins.

Among jockeys ranking in the top 100 in victories, Prescott was by far the most active, as he rode the 340 winners in a total of 2,056 mounts. No other jockey among the top 100 had more than 1,700 mounts on the year.

Prescott’s mounts earned a total of $3,520,430 on the year.

Tribe splits with Minster

MINSTER, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s eighth grade girls basketball team took control in the first quarter and never let go in a 33-19 win over the Minster Wildcats Tuesday. The seventh graders scored just five points in the second and third quarters combined in a 38-25 defeat.

Chelsey Leuthold scored 10 points to lead the eighth grade team (4-2), which jumped out to an eight-point lead after the opening quarter. Josie Guggenbiller added eight points, and Nicole Pottkotter scored seven.

The seventh graders (4-2) trailed by six after the opening period, and the deficit grew to 15 points at the half. Kendra Brunswick, Olivia Thien and Lindsay Schroer each scored eight points.

Two win titles

YORKTOWN — A pair of Jay County wrestlers won titles as the junior varsity team competed at the Yorktown Invitational Friday.

Cameron Pfeifer finished 4-0 to take first place at 103 pounds, and Andrew Lancaster was 4-0 to win the 160-pound crown.

Shae White (160) was second with a 3-1 record, as was Josh Lochtefeld (112). Brad Tipton (152) also went 3-1 and finished fifth.
