Starfire girls stumble again (01/23/06)

BERNE — Another rough first half sent the South Adams girls basketball team to its 11th straight defeat Saturday.

The Starfires hit just four first-half field goals as they fell behind 30-12 on the way to a 54-40 loss to the Woodlan Warriors.

South Adams (1-13, 0-6 Allen County Athletic Conference) doubled its shooting percentage to 31 percent in the second half, but that still only lifted them to 12-of-52 (23 percent) for the game. The Warriors finished at 46 percent after going 13-of-23 (57 percent) before the intermission.

Danae Lengacher led Woodlan (7-10, 3-3 ACAC) with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Kelly Bradtmuller had 11 points and eight rebounds, Carly Ruckman scored nine points, and Adrienne Numbers had eight points. Laura Hoeppner totaled nine rebounds and three assists.

Erin McCollum topped the scoring for the Starfires with nine points. Julie Muhlenkamp had eight points and seven rebounds, and Kayla Coblentz added eight points and three assists.

Anne Lehman had nine points for the South Adams junior varsity team in a 32-27 defeat.

Fort tops St. Marys

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior high boys basketball teams each played outstanding defense in the opening quarter en route to wins over the St. Marys Roughriders Saturday. The eighth grade squad rolled to a 45-24 win while the seventh graders held off a late charge to take a 45-24 victory.

The Indian eighth graders pushed out a 16-1 lead after the opening period. They continued to dominate for a 30-6 halftime lead as they improved to 9-1.

Cody Fiely scored all of his team-high 15 points on 3-pointers. Greg Kahlig added 11 points, and Josh Wendel scored eight.

Eagles win invite

DUNKIRK — West Jay’s eighth grade girls basketball team won its invitational Saturday.

The Eagles topped Montpelier 27-14, then lost to Hartford City 36-35 in overtime. But each team finished with one loss and West Jay won the tie breaker for largest point differential.

Brittany Muhlenkamp led the win over Montpelier with nine points. Amber McCowan added seven points.

McCowan and Keri VanSkyock each had 10 points in the loss to Hartford City. Muhlenkamp scored eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
