Local roundup

WOODBURN - Every Starfire girl crossed the finish line before their opponents. The boys team nearly accomplished the same feat.

South Adams High School cross country teams rolled over the host Woodlan Warriors Tuesday with the girls winning 15-50 and the boys 17-45.

Brooke Kirchhofer led the dominant effort for the Starfire girls, who ran in a pack to sweep the top seven spots. She was first in 24 minutes, 54 seconds while runner-up Hannah Moore and third-place finisher Kristen Muselman each matched her time.

Sawyer Shane and Jenna Smith placed fourth and fifth respectively in 24:55. Adrianna Teeter was sixth and Emily Miller placed seventh.

Evan Liechty set the pace for the Starfire boys, winning by nearly a minute in 18:20. Sam Heckard followed in 19:15 for second place, and Joel Hawbaker was third at 19:43.

In middle school action Brody Shane and Ryan Ford finished first and second respectively to lead the South Adams boys to a 15-50 victory. Allison Amstutz was the runner-up in the girls race as the Starfires lost 21-34.

SA girls soccer falls

NEW HAVEN - The South Adams girls soccer team couldn't make a first-half lead stand up as it lost 2-1 Tuesday to the New Haven Bulldogs.

The Starfires grabbed the lead when Katrina Hawkins scored on a breakaway. They took the 1-0 advantage into the intermission before New Haven evened the score in the second half.

The Bulldogs grabbed the lead with 20 minutes to play when SAHS goalie Jessie Beavers tried to knock their shot up over the crossbar. Instead it bounced over her head and into the goal for the final margin.
