Starfire softball earns 1st win

BERNE — The South Adams High School tennis team opened its season in commanding fashion, blanking the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons 5-0.
Sophomores Brittany Potts and Riley Liechty won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles respectively, with Potts beating Grace Retter 6-2, 6-3 and Leichty defeating Miranda Winningham 6-1, 6-0.
Maddie Graber beat Emily White 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
The Starfires’ senior duo of Maddy Kloepper and Erika Miller beat Makenzie Winger and Leah Wren at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-0. South Adams sophomores Kylea Pierce and Autumn VonGunten beat fellow sophomores Ashley Wilcox and Leah Mackey, 6-0, 6-1.
In junior varsity action, Shiana Scott, Kara Seffernick, MaJenna Gerber, Treva Clingenpeel, Korinna Schindler and Erica Bradertscher all earned wins for South Adams.
SA tops Blackford
HARTFORD CITY — One day after losing a close game to Jay County, the South Adams softball team evened its record with a 12-9 win over the host Blackford Bruins.
Alaina Johnston led the Starfires with three hits, including one double, and was one of three players to score a pair of runs.
Lauren Smith and Kaitlin Augsburger both added two hits.
Augsburger recorded the win for South Adams, striking out three and walking four in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Abby Myers started in the circle, striking out four and scattering eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Maddie Morgan and Alex Whiting both had stolen bases.
Dary Robertson had three hits for the Bruins, including a pair of doubles.[[In-content Ad]]
