Starfire spikers close with win

BERNE — The Starfires closed their season with a victory. They hope to be able to carry that momentum through to tournament play.
South Adams High School’s volleyball team fought off the visiting Fort Wayne South Side Archers 25-15, 23-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-12 Monday in its final match of the regular season.
Cady Farlow racked up 23 kills to pace the offense for the Starfires, who will open play in the Class 2A sectional tournament against Churubusco at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bluffton. Ashlynn Jennings totaled 52 assists.
Alyssa Bluhm had 12 kills and 10 digs, and Lauren Smith finished with 15 digs.
The South Adams junior varsity team won 25-17, 25-17 with Brittany Potts leading the way with nine kills.
Fort JV loses
ST. HENRY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery junior varsity football team suffered a 38-16 loss Monday to the St. Henry Redskins.
Darien Sheffer scored the Indians’ first touchdown on a 10-yard run. He added a 50-yard scoring pass to Ross Homan.
Wes Wenning and Mike Joash each ran in for two-point conversions for Fort Recovery (5-4).
Miles sweeps invite
WARSAW — Courtney Miles dominated the competition as three gymnasts from Jay County competed Saturday at the Flippin’ Into Fall Invitational.
Miles won all four events in Level 7 to take the top spot in the all-around competition with a score of 35.925. Her best score was a 9.475 on the vault, and she added a 9.25 on the balance beam, a 9.0 on the floor exercise and an 8.2 on the uneven bars.
Halle Hill finished second in the Level 7 all-around competition with a 33.575. She was the runner-up on both the vault (9.35) and balance beam (8.7).
Hannah Outcalt had her best score on the balance beam, posting an 8.75 to finish sixth in Level 3.
All three athletes compete for Marion’s Mid America Gymnastics.
