BERNE — They were just waiting for conference play.

The South Adams Starfires won just one of their first 10 volleyball matches this season. But now that play has begun in the Allen County Athletic Conference they’re undefeated.

South Adams took its second straight ACAC match Thursday night, coming back for an 18-25, 28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 15-11 victory over the Bluffton Tigers.

Senior Renee Neuenschwander again powered the Starfires (3-9, 2-0 ACAC), racking up double-digit kills and digs. She had 14 of each, and added a team-high three aces to go along with a pair of blocks.

Andrea Moser followed with 10 kills and three blocks, and Brooke Fox added nine kills. Alyssa Miller racked up 38 assists.

Maranda Potts finished behind Neuenschwander with eight digs, and Tamara Moser notched three aces and two blocks.

South Adams dropped the junior varsity match 25-18, 25-11.

Chief gridders drop first

An 80-yard kickoff return foiled the East Jay eighth grade football team in its season opener Thursday. The squad lost 14-12 to the New Castle Trojans, and the seventh graders were shut out 20-0.

East Jay’s eighth graders (0-1) held the lead twice in the contest.

They opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run by Nick Stephen in the first quarter, but New Castle evened the score at 6-6 in the second.

However, New Castle responded with its kickoff return and was successful on the 2-point conversion for the victory.

Vance had 93 yards rushing on 13 carries in the defeat. Alex Langenkamp was 3-of-5 passing for 79 yards with Scott Houston catching two of those passes for 75 yards.

Tyler Freyburger paced the team with 10 tackles.

The Trojans posted touchdowns in the second, third and fourth quarters to defeat East Jay’s seventh graders.

Austin Emerick was 3-for-7 passing for 48 yards for the Chiefs, and D.J. Teeple carried 10 times for 23 yards. Teeple also had five tackles.

St. Johns defeats Tribe

CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys golf team managed three scores in the 40s, but could not quite keep up with the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays in a 180-185 defeat Thursday.

Aaron Kahlig paced the Indians, matching Brad Wannemacher of St. Johns for match medalist honors with a 42. He had five pars in his round.

Scott Hein had a pair of pars for a 44, and Matt Brunswick also had two pars for a 49. David Schmitt completed the team score with a 50, Kevin Schoenherr shot 52 and Curtis Knoth notched a 53.

East Jay takes third

DECATUR — The East Jay and West Jay cross country teams competed at the Bellmont Conditioner Thursday, with East Jay taking third in the boys, girls and reserve events.

Norwell finished first in the boys and reserve competitions, and Maple Creek took the girls victory. West Jay did not have enough runners to post any team scores.

Patrick Johnson and Tevin Nichols posted the best finish for either school, teaming for fifth place in 11-minutes, five seconds in the two-mile relay format. Leah Wellman and Katie Butcher also posted a top-10 finish for the East Jay girls, taking eighth in 13:08.

Kristen Selvey and Macy Gerber teamed for 16th to lead the West Jay girls. Jeremiah Cotherman and Chance Fuller paced the boys in 22nd.

Fort Recovery blanked

MINSTER — Fort Recovery’s seventh grade football team dropped its first contest of the season 16-0 to the Minster Wildcats Thursday.

Minster scored touchdowns in the first and second quarters.[[In-content Ad]]
