Local roundup
BLUFFTON — The Starfires have hit some moon shots.
For the second time this season the South Adams baseball team went deep three times. Austin Givens, Jordan Sharp and Brent Habegger all hit home runs Thursday as the Starfires blasted the Bluffton Tigers 20-9 in five innings in their Allen County Athletic Conference opener.
Givens paced South Adams (5-1), which scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings highlighted by an eight-run third. He finished 3-for-4 with his homer, three runs and five RBIs.
Sharp and Habegger each had two hits, including the home runs, two runs and two RBIs. Sharp also had a stolen base.
Corey LeMaster went 2-for-2 with four runs and two RBIs, and Mike Farris scored three runs. Lukas Baumgartner and Will Grandlinard each had two hits, and Brent Newport drove in a pair of runs.
Farris was the beneficiary of the offense, getting the win in 21/3 innings of work. He allowed five runs — four earned — on one hit and eight walks. Thomas Masterson worked 22/3 innings of relief.

Jay County’s softball team has had mixed results in close games.
Three of the squad’s four victories this year have come in the seventh inning or later. But the Patriots (4-7) have also lost five times by two runs or fewer, including a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the visiting Norwell Knights Thursday.
After falling behind 4-0 — Norwell got an unearned run in the third inning, a solo homer in the fourth and two runs in the fifth — Jay County tried to rally in the seventh again, but could only manage half the runs they needed.
Amber Edmundson suffered the defeat in relief of Shae Keller, who left the game in the first inning because of pain in her knee. Edmundson allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits and two walks.
Saffron Redwine led the Patriot offense with two hits and an RBI. Trisha Champ and Chelsea DeBoy each had a hit and a run.[[In-content Ad]]
