Starfires bounce back to forge weekend split (05/17/04)

Local Roundup

The Starfires scored more runs in the second game of their double-header against the Mississinewa Indians Saturday than they had hits in the entire first game. The offensive outburst was good enough for them to pull off a split.

The South Adams baseball team struggled mightily in the first game in a 3-2 defeat, but came back for a 10-2 victory in the second contest.

After getting just two hits — both by Justin Caffee — in the first contest, the Starfires scored three times in the first inning of game-two Saturday. They added two more runs in the third and four in the fourth and were never challenged.

Kyle White had another outstanding game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. He drove in three runs and scored three times.

Kyle Neuenschwander also went deep for South Adams with a solo home run. He added a single and a pair of runs.

Craig Neuenschwander also had two hits and drove in four runs. Lukas Baumgartner had two runs and one RBI, and Caffee scored twice.

Tyler Sprunger earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked eight.

Mississinewa scored twice in the first inning of the first game. The Starfires clawed back to tie the game, but the Indians broke the deadlock with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Caffee took the game-one defeat as he and Kyle Neuenschwander produced all of the South Adams offense. Caffee had the lone RBI to go along with his two hits, and Neuenschwander scored both runs.

Caffee gave up three runs — two earned — on four hits. He struck out five and walked three.

The Starfires will return to Allen County Athletic Conference action Tuesday at Adams Central at 4:30 p.m.

Tribe JV falls

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity softball team didn’t have much luck as it visited Wapakoneta Friday, losing to the Redskins 17-2.

Wapakoneta scored 10 times before the Indians got on the board with their only two runs in the top of the fourth innings. The Redskins added three more runs in the bottom of the frame and four in the sixth for the final margin.

Jennifer Link and Jill Wehrkamp each had two hits, including a double, for Fort Recovery. Sandra Sudhoff also had a pair of hits.

Abby Niekamp drove in a run, and Lauren Wenning and Kelly Link each scored once.

Jill Wehrkamp tossed two innings and took the defeat, and Lori Osterholt pitched four innings.[[In-content Ad]]
