Starfires bounced from tourney (06/05/04)

Local Roundup

After more than a week off, the South Adams baseball team watched its season fade away in the final innings Friday.

The Starfires, who hadn’t played since Wednesday, May 26, dropped a 6-2 decision to the host Heritage Patriots in sectional semifinal action Friday.

The game was tied at 2-2 after four innings as both teams scored one run apiece in the third and fourth. But Heritage kept scoring — twice in the fifth inning, once in the sixth and once in the seventh — while South Adams offense went stagnant.

Justin Caffee suffered the season-ending loss, allowing six runs — two earned — on eight hits in 61/3 innings. He walked four and struck out eight.

Kyle Neuenschwander paced the offense with a pair of hits, including a solo home run. Kyle White went 2-for-3, and Tyler Sprunger singled and scored a run.
