Starfires fall to Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER - There will be one more chance to the South Adams High School girls basketball team to pick up a win before the tournament.

The Starfires dropped their ninth straight game Thursday, 48-25 to the host Manchester Squires, and will play Bellmont in their regular-season finale tonight.

Karen Bollenbacher and Jaci Liechty each scored eight points for SAHS (2-16), which trailed 20-5 at halftime. Lyndsey Chandler added four points.

Jessica Bedke paced Manchester (11-9) with 14 points.

In the junior varsity game Whitney Matney scored half of the Starfires' points as they lost 32-10.

WJMS grapplers roll

HARTFORD CITY - West Jay Middle School's wrestling team picked up eight pins Thursday in a 60-30 victory over Hartford City.

Coby Green was off the mat in a hurry in his 100-pound match, scoring a pin in just six seconds. Other pins came from J.P. Fischer (85), Dallas Dudleston (90), Bryce Bantz (105), Jesse Finnerty (120), Sean Winget (125), Chaz McClain (135) and Mitch Bennett (HWT).

FR 8th grade cruises

FORT RECOVERY - Elijah Kahlig powered the Fort Recovery eighth grade boys basketball team Thursday in its 56-27 win over the St. Henry Redskins.

The seventh graders lost 34-29.

Kahlig scored 18 points as the eighth grade Indians improved to 10-2. Ben Dilworth and Alex Kaiser each added seven points.

Evan Schoen and Mitch Stammen had eight points apiece for the seventh graders (2-10).

Stars top East Jay

BERNE - The East Jay wrestling team slipped to 6-3 Thursday with a 53-22 loss to host South Adams.

The Chiefs picked up two pins against South Adams with Ryan Claytor-Tinkham finishing off his 160-pound match in 1 minute, 37 seconds. Preston Keen won the 135-pound match in 3:53.

Other wins came from Alex Abbott, Will Rowles and Zach Metcalf.

Ian Bentz, Dustin Cope, Andrew Kohler and Hunter Gillette picked up junior varsity victories.

Eagle 6th grade wins

DUNKIRK - West Jay's sixth grade boys basketball team picked up a 24-9 victory at home Thursday over Hartford City.

Kyler Carvel led the Eagles (3-1) to the victory with eight points. Joey Springer added six points.
