Starfires get bye, open in semifinal vs. Woodlan (10/14/03)

South Adams got the bye, but their trip to the finals is still a difficult one.

The Starfire volleyball team learned its tournament fate Monday when the state pairings were drawn by the IHSAA. It will get a first round bye, and play Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Heritage Sectional against Allen County Athletic Conference foe Woodlan.

The teams have already met twice this year, with South Adams (10-18) winning the first game of each match before losing in four. The Starfires lost 19-21, 22-20, 21-15, 21-15 during the regular season and 18-21, 21-16, 21-14, 21-17 in the ACAC tournament.

Woodlan currently has a record of 22-7.

In first-round matches at Heritage Thursday, Oct. 23, Fort Wayne Harding will take on Class 2A No. 6 Adams Central (22-5) and the host Patriots will play Bluffton. The winners of the first-round matches will meet Saturday at 11 a.m., with the South Adams/Woodlan match to follow.

The championship match will be Saturday at 7 p.m. with the tournament winner moving on to the Oak Hill regional.

JC JV crushes Spartans

Big plays were the thing of the day for the Jay County junior varsity football team Monday.

The Patriots scored three touchdowns of 60 yards or more in a 37-12 trouncing of the Connersville Spartans. The first of those mammoth scores came from Justin Gilbert.

Gilbert opened the game with an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to give Jay County (3-2-1) a quick lead.

He nearly gave the Patriots another long score, hitting Josh Glessner on a 70-yard halfback pass. Glessner fell short of the end zone, but the play set up a 3-yard scoring run by Josh Parker.

A safety by Bill Spahr and David Minnich in the first quarter combined with the two touchdowns to give Jay County a 16-6 halftime lead.

Adam Foster found Glessner with a 75-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and Mike Armstrong ran for a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth. Parker iced the game with a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Chris Elmore took care of the point after touchdown kicks, hitting four in the contest. Denny Gardner had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Cavs stomp Fort

The powerful Coldwater Cavaliers football program was too much for Fort Recovery Monday. The Tribe’s freshman football team fell to Coldwater 56-0.

EJ 8th closes with win

The East Jay eighth grade volleyball team finished its turnaround regular season with a 21-17, 21-14 victory over Bellmont Monday. After winning just two games last season as seventh graders, the team heads into the eighth grade tournament with a 9-2 record.

The seventh grade team suffered a 21-19, 18-21, 21-9 defeat to Bellmont.

Stephanie Wellman paced the eighth-grade effort with seven points, including two aces. Julie Alig was a perfect 6-for-6 serving with one ace.

The seventh grade team got 13 points, including three aces, from Sarah Byrum. Mackenzie Loy had five points and two aces.

Eagles split pair

West Jay’s volleyball teams took on Salamonie Monday with the seventh graders scoring a 21-16, 22-20 victory. The eighth grade team lost 21-6, 21-14.

Kelci Reed paced the seventh grade team with seven points, and Chelsea Grady with six. Lacey Robbins and Brittney Muhlenkamp each scored three points.

The eighth grade team got four points from Janae Hatfield and two by Brittany O’Dell.

Football tickets

Fort Recovery will begin selling tickets for Friday’s football game at Coldwater Wednesday.

Tickets will be available in the high school office Wednesday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The will also be sold in the middle school office Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Pre-sale tickets are $3 for students at $5 for adults. All tickets at the gate will be $5.

Baseball tryouts

The D.C. Lightning baseball team for 10-year-olds is preparing for the 2004 season.

The team plays various area teams, as well as some from Kentucky and Ohio. Games are played under high school rules.

Turkey chase

Wayne and Union County Easter Seals will host a turkey chase Saturday, Nov. 15. The event will include a 7K road race, a 2 1/2 mile historic walk, a one-mile fun run and a kiddie run.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. on the day of the event in the Centerville High School auxiliary gym west of the football field. The kiddie run will start at noon with the fun run at 12:30 p.m. and the 7K at 1 p.m.

The entry fee for those for those who sign up by Nov. 12 is $14 for the 7K, $14 for the walk and $2 for the fun run. There is no entry fee for the kiddie run.
