Starfires lose another tight game (02/25/04)

The South Adams boys basketball team was close again. But it lost again.

The Starfires dropped their nine straight game Tuesday, losing 47-44 to the Winchester Golden Falcons.

South Adams (3-14) was ahead by one at the end of each of the first three quarters, but could not hold on in the fourth. The Goldens took a 15-11 scoring advantage in the final period to swipe the victory.

Justin Caffee scored 12 points to lead the Starfires, who were battered by poor foul shooting. Caffee was 6-of-7 from the line, while Kyle Neuenschwander finished 2-of-7 and Corey LeMaster hit just 1-of-7 as the team finished 10-of-29.

Neuenschwander had eight points and seven rebounds. Josh Sprunger scored eight points, and LeMaster had five rebounds.

WJ bounces back

West Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season to destroy Montpelier 60-10 Tuesday.

The Eagles, who lost for the first time Monday, opened a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. They were up by 26 at halftime and 40 after three quarters on the way to the win.

Josh Beaty led West Jay (3-1) with 15 points, and Taylor Farmer also reached double figues with 11. Willis Mayfield and Michael Daniels each added seven points.

Local bowlers 2nd, 4th

A couple of Jay County High School students picked up high finishes in the TKO bowling tournament in Noblesville recently. Andy Hughes placed second and Corey Mock finished fourth.

Hughes rolled a 1,033 five-game total to qualify him fifth for the tournament format. He went on to win three elimination matches before losing in the championship by four points.

Mock also qualified fifth in his division with a 1,132-pin total. We picked up one victory before losing to the eventual champion.

Fort tickets

Advance tickets to Fort Recovery’s sectional girls basketball game vs. Marion Local at New Bremen Saturday will go on sale Thursday.

Tickets will be sold in the high school office Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be sold in the middle school office from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

Advance tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the door will be $5.

Saturday’s sectional-championship double-header will be a split session. The gym will be cleared after the first game prior to the contest between Fort Recovery and Marion Local.[[In-content Ad]]
