Starfires pick up first victory

BERNE - A third-quarter explosion keyed the South Adams High School girls basketball Saturday as it got its first win of the season 42-35 over the visiting Union City Indians.

Tori Smith set the pace for the Starfires (1-3), who trailed by two at the half before outscoring Union City 16-2 in the third quarter. She finished with a game-high 12 points.

Jaci Liechty added 10 points. Tori Kistler scored five points, and Jen Miller finished with five.

South Adams also won the junior varsity game 29-15 led by Alyssa Armenta's nine points. Kristen Musselman added seven points.

Jay 3-4 in opener

NEW CASTLE - Jay County's wrestling team went 3-4 Saturday as it opened its weekend at the New Castle six-way.

The Patriots defeated Lincoln 69-4, Milan 54-25 and Olympic Athletic Conference rival Connersville 36-32. They lost to the host Trojans 59-9, Lafayette Harrison 66-12, Westfield 59-12 and Columbus East 54-16.

Blowers and Drake Meska, a senior and junior respectively, set the pace for JCHS. They finished 6-1 at heavyweight and 130 pounds respectively.

Matt James, another senior, went 5-2 at 251, and junior Dyllan Derrickson was 4-3 at 140.

Myers wins four

CONNERSVILLEā€ˆ- Kearston Myers led the Jay County Winter Swim Team with four victories this weekend at the Connersville Turkey Trot Invitational.

Myers took the top spot in four of her five events to earn high-point honors in the 6-and-younger girls division. She was second in her fifth event.

Anne Vormohr swept her five events in the 11-12-year-old division and Carley Stone added four victories in the 9-10-year-old girls division. Eliza Bader finished first the 8-and-younger girls 25-yard backstroke.

Vormohr also teamed with Cori Stone, Ashley Mark and Cady Farlow to win the 11-12-year-old girls freestyle relay and earn a spot in the state meet.[[In-content Ad]]
