Starfires place fourth at home (05/12/03)

The Starfire boys and girls track teams each placed fourth as they hosted the South Adams Invitational Friday.
The boys team was five points out of the top three with a score of 73. Bellmont was first with 164 points, Heritage scored a 104 and Bluffton had 78.
The girls team finished with 64 points, and Adams Central was third with 71.5. Bellmont won the meet with 127.5, and Heritage took second with 109.
Adam Zimmerman and Heath Lehman had the leading efforts for the Starfires on the night, each placing second in one event and third in another.
Zimmerman’s best finish came in the 200-meter dash, in which he placed second with a time of 24.2. He was also third in the 100-meter dash in 11.65.
Lehman was second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:47.8. Teammate Josh Sprunger trailed him in third place in 11:21.60.
Lehman also placed third in the 1600-meter run, crossing the finish line in 4:44.26. He teamed with Tim Conrad, Josh Sprunger and Nathan Sprunger to place second in the 3200-meter relay with a time of 8:49.2.
Zimmerman added a solid relay finish, leading the 1600-meter relay team of Greg Brooks, Darius Martens and Kyle Litwiller to a third-place effort in 3:55.30.
Conrad had the other top-three finish for the Starfires with a time of 2:07 to place third in the 800-meter run.
Laura Meshberger had the top finish for the girls team, taking second in the long jump at 14 feet, three and one-half inches. Three other South Adams athletes placed third in their respective events Friday.
Lauren Tooley took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37, Jenny Lehman was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.87, and Hannah Lautzenheiser was third in the high jump at four feet, eight and one-quarter inches.
The 400-meter relay team of Lehman, Meshberger, Casey Gentis and Chelsea Minnich was second with a time of 53.9. Tooley teamed with Kristen Whitehurst, Jaime Paul and Brittany Seeker to place third in the 3200-meter relay in 11:06.
The next meet for South Adams is at Blackford today at 4:30 p.m.
SA loses to Squaws
South Adams’ softball team came up with some offense, but it was too little, too late in a 5-2 loss to Bellmont Saturday.
The Starfires trailed 3-0, but pulled within a run by scoring two in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Squaws bounced right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame and went on to the win.
Andrea Kaehr and Candice Miller each had two hits and a run scored for South Adams. Lee Ann Snyder also had two hits, and Jessica Smith added a hit and an RBI.
Mickayla Smith took the loss, allowing five runs — one earned — on five hits in six innings. She walked three and struck out two.
