Starfires roll over Union City

UNION CITY — On Tuesday night, the Starfires needed a three-set victory to knock off Blackford. There was no such pressure Wednesday.
The South Adams High School boys tennis team dominated the Union City Indians, rolling to a 4-1 victory.
The Starfires picked up a pair of shutout victories, with No. 3 singles player Jared Rife blanking Kullen Weiss 6-0, 6-0. Dylan Pierce and Blake Baumer defeated Chris Lambdin and Austin Green by the same score at No. 2 doubles.
Landon Lehman and Cole Myers won the No.1 doubles match 6-0, 6-1 over Reece Martin and Jacob Mayfield, and Dexter Miller beat Tyler Gundlach 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Brayden Myers took the only loss for SAHS, falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Ben VanCamp at No. 1 singles.
Cody Simindinger and Cody Baker each won junior varsity matches.

SA girls place third
OSSIAN — The South Adams Middle School girls cross country team placed third out of 10 teams with 89 points at Wednesday’s Norwell Invitational.
The East Jay girls were seventh with 164 points. The SAMS boys were sixth out of 10 teams with 196 points, and the East Jay boys were eighth with 233.
Maple Creek won both the boys and girls competitions.
Olivia Von Gunten led the Starfire girls, placing second in 11 minutes, 43 seconds. Kara Seffernick was 13th in 12:27, and Eliza Harruff was 32nd in 13:04.
Wyatt Miller of South Adams was the top male runner from the two local teams, finishing in 11:37 for 14th place. East Jay’s Alex LeMaster finished 32nd in 12:14.
Kendra Muhlenkamp placed 17th for the EJMS girls in 12:54.

Pee Wee kicks off
Parker and Landon Grimes each scored two touchdowns Saturday as Jay County Pee Wee Football kicked off its season.
Parker Grimes scored twice to lead the Chiefs to a 26-20 victory over the Giants. Landon tallied his two TDs in the Steelers’ 25-0 win over the Colts.
Daniel Ostrowski, Gabe Link and Nathanial Day each scored one TD as the Bears beat the Bengals 24-0.
Also scoring touchdowns Saturday were Hunter Miller, Trey Castillo, Gabe Faulkner, Wyatt Geesaman, Brandon McIntire, Quinn Faulkner, Josh Crouch and Zerrin Cantu.

Houck helps Wolves
RICHMOND — Drew Houck was one of five players to all break 80 for the Indiana University East men’s golf team Aug. 21 as it edged the University of Northwestern Ohio 297-299 in the first NAIA golf match of the season.
Houck was especially strong for the Red Wolves on the front nine at Highland Lake Golf Course as he shot a 38. He finished his round with a 78 for the No. 5 score on the IU East squad.
Monroe Central graduate Cameron Cox led the Red Wolves with a 73.[[In-content Ad]]
